I've just got one of those new fangled HDTV things with component inputs so I decided to purchase a component cable for my Wii, hasn't arrived yet. I've been running it through RGB scart at 576i. Should I expect a big difference when my component cable arrives? I've been thinking, and surely the only difference between 576i and 480p is the refresh rate, 25Hz vs 60Hz, and might I even get a worse picture due to the decrease in horizontal lines? I guess I'll find out when my cable arrives. Just wondered if anyone's had any experience with this? Have I wasted my money? |

Registered 20 years agoProgressive adds a bit of sharpness and clarity, but you definately notice the drop in resolution. some games actually look better in 576i.

Registered 15 years agoCheers guys, looks like I'll stick to 576i. I've just cancelled my component cable order. Luckily it was out of stock. .gif)
Edit: Just thought, there's no point running 576i through component instead of RGB is there? Don't some TVs have problems with this anyway for VC games?

So none of you are bothering to run stuff in PAL60 mode, then?
Frame rate ftw, no? No?
You're an odd bunch, you Wiiers.

Resolution over framerate. 5/10fps is nothing
No, you're wrong. 5fps is 16% of your frames skipped or your game running 16% slower. That's bloody noticeable, regardless of what you reckon..gif)

The difference was noticeable in the Cube version of Zelda. I surmise the Wii version was the same.
no, the PAL conversions seem to be spot on. -

Registered 18 years agoI find the loss of frames really noticeable. Just look at the scrolling text in the Vote Channel thumbnail to see it.
Jerk o vision galore.

Anyways, Wii games seem to run full speed in 576i mode anyways..gif)
Not all. And at any rate 480p over component looks a lot nicer than 480i or 576i anyway on my HDTV. It's actuall quite noticeable - although it would not make all that much difference on a CRT I guess. -

Registered 15 years agoGhaa! What have I started?
I think I'll just try out both to see which I like before buying another cable. I have already spent £18 on an RGB scart after all.
Now to find a component cable to borrow........
Thanks for the advice chaps. I guess it really depends on the TV and how well it handles 576i.
No matter what I do, I don't think it'll look as good as it did on my old CRT.
See what you've done PS3 with your shiny HD graphics!! -

That AND how your eyes and brain work together.
Some people like TVs others find hard to look at, some see flickering where others don't, some find colours bright and clear when others say they are oversaturated, and so forth.
When it comes to display / TV quality, there is no other way than to try for yourself.
No matter what I do, I don't think it'll look as good as it did on my old CRT.
FWIW, I never looked back since getting my Bravia. Actually I did, but could only stand it for a few moments.

Pretty cheap wii component cables are available and often as good if not better than official nintendo cables. -

Registered 18 years agoI might order some of those cables with my T-Mobile Vario II rocking Windows Mobile 5.0. I get 50mb data a month, may as well use it! -
Good bump, I'm sure the Xbox one crew will probably want an answer to this too.
