Arguing Page 3

Fucking hell. This is pissing me off seriously. There was not one single thing wrong with that thread.

Show me, aside from the sock puppet bit, where there was a problem with that thread:

Please take the time to read and follow these simple guidelines and rules and your stay on the Eurogamer forum will be a happy one!

    When posting...

    1. Craft your subject line - Be descriptive, but be brief. [If your thread subject gives no clue to it's contents, it will be renamed]
    2. Category - Put your thread in the right category and it can be found more easily through the filters than one in the 'Gaming' category.
    3. Language - Don't write in ALL CAPS or TXT SPK or L33T SP33K - It is hard to read and annoys people.
    4. Write clearly - We can't all be great writers, but at least we can give it our best shot.

    Think before you post...

    1. Intent - Are you writing something that you want to question, inform or share with the other users?
    2. Chill out - If someone is being an idiot, you don't have to join them.
    3. Worth - Is there a similar thread, are you creating a thread to reply to another, have you done a search?
    4. Discussion - This is a public discussion forum, so if you wish to talk to another member privately you should attempt a different form of communication.
    5. Spam - Blatant advertising, trolling and linking to illegal stuff such as warez are not allowed.
    6. Abuse - If your post is abusing other users or moderators you run the risk of being banned.

    Moderators...

We will remove posts that contain racist or homophobic remarks, personal abuse, libel, copyrighted material, excessive swearing, references to illegal activities and requests for CD keys or pirated software.

Users who repeatedly post inflammatory ("troll") topics or contravene the site posting guidelines will find their posts removed and eventually their user account removed. Eurogamer reserves the right to remove posting privileges from any account at any time. In general the staff will endeavour to issue warnings before a user account is removed or suspended, however, in the instance of severe transgressions, this action may be taken without any prior warning.

If you spot a post on the forum that breaks our comments policy then please post in the Moderator Batphone category, or contact us and we will sort it out.

If your thread is deleted then look back and see if you've broken any of these rules or look for a thread on a similar topic. If you post a "Why was my thread deleted?" thread, it will be deleted without warning.

Registering multiple accounts ("sockpuppets") could result in bans for some or all of the accounts in question. One person, one account.

Please also read this post from Shinji:

    Shinji wrote:
    ...
    * Someone with a strongly held opinion that is contrary to you is not a "troll" and they won't be banned and dragged away just for getting up your nose. Deal with it.

    * However, someone who decides to become abusive or spammy, or hijacks other threads, in order to propogate that strong opinion, IS a troll and will get banned. It won't happen overnight. We're not about to start telling mods to ban everyone who says "Wow I think PS3 looks great/shit!" from a videogames forum..

    * People are going to say things here which offend you. The Ignore Poster button exists for this. Don't want to ignore posters because it messes up the forum? Then grow a thicker skin. It's not up to the moderators to ensure that you have a fun happy life with birds singing and the sun shining at all times.

    * Got a legitimate problem with another poster? Post in the moderation batphone category - we'll set up an email address in the near future that you can drop a line to about forum issues as well. Do NOT start trying to deal with your problem by being just as offensive or rude back to the other poster, or by doing something underhanded, because then you'll get kicked out as well.

    * The fact that you've been posting here for X many months/years does not make you into the forum Sherrif. It's not your place to attempt to impose any kind of authority other than telling moderators about problems you see. Starting threads calling for people to be GI'd is a serious no-no, regardless of who you believe them to be. In future I'm going to start handing out temporary bans to people who hound or harrass other posters.

Just remember... As long as you don't insult people, keep the discussion relevant and don't generally act like an idiot, you won't have to worry about being moderated.

Come on guys don't give me that bollocks.

You really think it's OK to have a thread discussing how to make bombs?
  • Deleted user 23 May 2007 23:11:58
You really think that was serious?

Besides the thing is detailed in a book that anyone in this country can buy.

If anything I saw it as a satirical comment.

No I didn't think it was serious but I do know that there is some seriously questionable content in said cookbook and I really don't think it's appropriate (on this forum in particular) to be talking about that sort of stuff.

And while it might not have got that far yet, it was only ever going to go to shit.

Plus the fact that whichever version of spartan we're on created it, means it would have soon got derailed with the inevitable shit that's polluting the rest of the forum.

    :)

Well, true about how people react to him. But that was probably one of the first threads where people were actually playing along with it, rather than not getting it and wanting to shout their opinions across.

You know I'm not a Nazi so don't bother suggesting otherwise, I was just nipping it in the bud before it got out of hand because we all know it would have done.

So cut me some slack, stop fucking arguing with me and go watch some redtube videos or summat.

Cubby - I take it you've never actually properly come across the jolly roger cookbook? I'm pretty sure it's actually illegal to own it which should further help explain why I clamped down on any discussion of it.
  • Deleted user 23 May 2007 23:30:29
    Nah, never seen it

According to Wiki, Cubby, your confused.

The Jolly Roger's Cookbook is a digital collection of text files relating to the subjects of theft, computer hacking, the use and creation of explosives, as well as more diverse subjects. It is currently distributed from the website "The Anarchist Cookbook", and is often confused with, and mistakenly called, the actual Anarchist's Cookbook, written by William Powell in the late 1960s as a protest against the Vietnam War.

So seriously, what is going on at the moment? Is there a mod war breaking out or something?

Hehe, yeah this is way more interesting than any thread Spartan is going to create, he's just the mediator :)

Daisy - is it actually illegal to own? Seems unlikely, but seems worth checking =) I had it (and may still have it) to read the stuff on lockpicking, since I write a fair bit about thieves and it's good to know what you're talking about. Be a bitch to get arrested for it, particularly since you're stealing our DNA these days!
  • Deleted user 23 May 2007 23:51:47
I remember it doing the email rounds when I started Uni and someone nearly got kicked out of Uni for having it as it was 'highly illegal' or so we were told.
  • Deleted user 23 May 2007 23:53:25
Well the Jolly Rogers Cookbook, according to wiki (I'll ignore that it's been flagged since 2005) is an internet publication. And since there are no international laws that prohibit it it's not illegal as such. And seems to cover exactly the same stuff as The Anarchist Cookbook anyway, which is still in syndication, therefore legal. The names are erroneous, since the subject matter is exactly the same.

It's older than the internet - I remember people swapping it on 3.5" floppies!

I'd look bad if you had it in your possession and that was used in your trial for suspected terrorism, but having it lying around I can't imagine being illegal per se (IANAL, or a policeman)

Just being distributed in digital form is no exemption. Try downloading some kiddie porn and telling the cops.

Kiddie Porn is illegal in the UK. Possessing instructions on home-made explosives is not.

    That's what I said!

But it being "an internet" publication makes no difference.

No reason that having it can't be used to make you look bad in court, but it isn't illegal, I'd imagine.

Illegal or not, it's still not appropriate for here and I stand by that opinion.

And no there's not a mod war..............

Internet Watch Foundation have shut down websites with said instructions on, and the people hosting threatened with prosecution if they didn't comply. Admittedly, they don't anymore though.
