So the £270 ive spent on PS2 singstar games wont be compatible with the PS3 version?!

Surely it will have the option to pop in a PS2 disc rather then download all the tracks again?

Well, no - but then you can play all the PS2 singstar games on the PS3 anyway, with upscaling (even the ones that dont work, work with the ones that do via the 'disc change' option).

...which, in fairness - is probably more than you expected from when you got the first one 3 years ago...

    wtf

    I know, fuckin sad eh?!

Keep buying em for parties n stuff, and before you know it, ive got 11 of em!

I know they work on PS3 as upscaled PS2 games, but surely it wouldnt have been that hard for sony to include something in the game to let you use the PS3 GUI with the ps2 discs.

    Well, aye.

But they have a business model to maintain. If they let users do that, they would literally be throwing away millions of pounds worth of revenue.

I think 99p for new tracks, and old - is good. HD video and all the new features of SingStar - I wouldn't never have even begun to expect 'backwards importing' at all.

let me just clarify this: you purchase singstar bollywood? Is your Hindi that good?

It's transliterated, you don't need to know hindi.

Put all my singstars on ebay, people are paying around £15 each, so might as well cash em in and just buy the tracks i need on PSN store.

Ive heard that the UK version of SingStar PS3 doesn't work on the US playstation 3's - anyone had any experiences yet?

I'd be very interested to know that as I already preordered and paid for my copy. Worst case I'll let you know on Friday whether it works on a JP PS3, anyway...

There'd better be some Bollywood on the Singstore in the next few weeks; my PS2 is JP so I never got to play that one!

Where did you hear that from?
    It is perhaps possible.

afaik - its the first game to use the PlayStation store API, and have in game purchasing, which would make sense for a legitimate reason for region locking.

So, do the playstation 2 singstar discs work on the 40gb version of the ps3 (ie, without the backwards compatibility)?

    thanks

Just flog em on ebay like i did.

The very least you will get is £12 ish for each one, mine averaged at between £16 - £19

Then use the money you get to download the decent tracks from the disc through singstar store.

You will be lucky if there is 10 decent songs on each disc anyway!

I never thought about it not working on US consoles.

I thought the actual game would be region-free but USA people may have trouble getting on the Singstore and buying the songs because of the servers!

Why would we be able to download the stuff from the US and UK PSN store, but not the UK/European Singstore as it's region-locked depending on what console you have?

I have a US console, but live in the UK, but only buy stuff of the European PSN store.

Thankfully my bro has a UK console, so i can play it on that if it's region-locked.

Has anyone got hold of a copy of the final retail version of Singstar? Can anyone 100% confirm does not work on non-european PS3's?

I thought it would be locked to PSN account to cover distribution rights. In the same way iTunes works.

I was thinking of the drakes fortune demo backlash with accidental region lock.

If the blacklash is fifth of the Drakes Fortune another piece of bad PR is the last thing Sony need.

Also has anyone got a link a review or article that confirms it is region locked? Nobody has confirmed it as yet?

[The Drakes fortune thing was not intentional though, purely a mistake by the developers.]

I can’t think of any retail PS3 game which has been intentionally region locked... I think there was a Japanese-only game that was. Maybe.

SingStar, being the first game to use PlayStation store API in-game AND be the first game to have licensed DRM song & video downloads, I think places itself in a whole new area.
The game will automatically connect to your regions store to purchase tracks.
Does Sony Computer Entertainment Europe want people to be able to buy tracks from anywhere in the world via a European copy of the game? Maybe, they can gain extra revenue from other regions using their product.
Does Sony Computer Entertainment America want people to be able to buy tracks via the European copy of the game? Definitely not. They want you to buy their version of the game, so they get the money.
How does DRM play a part? Do record companies lock down their song downloads depending on where you are in the world? Extremely likely.

It comes as no surprise to me that this game has region locking, anyone hoping to play it on their non-EU console is really hoping very high. There are simply too many legal implications on this product – the delay of the game only highlights this.

Bottom line is: If you’re in Europe and have a non-E.U console – there is no obligation from Sony Europe to ensure that SingStar will work on your ‘foreign’ console hardware
Likewise, if you’re outside of Europe with a non-E.U console – then this game isn’t available to buy yet in your region, and for plenty of valid legal reasons.

However, it does leave a few questions:

Will SingStar work on a U.S console?
If it does, will SingStore work on a U.S console running a U.S PSN account?
Or will SingStore work on a U.S console running an E.U PSN account?
Will the SingStore work on an E.U console running a U.S PSN account?

Don't think it would result in bad pr as it wouldn't be sonys fault it would be due to the record companies and the varying artists and labels that are diffrent per country. It is one of the few titles which makes me understand why it might be region protected

I understand the Drakes thing was a mistake.

The chance of a region lock is high. But so far this region lock thing on Singstar so far seems to be one person just saying it. I have not read or find via goggle any article/review that says it is region locked.

    I just got it! Horrah!

As normal, it says 'Region 2' on the back.
Smallprint states that its "licensed for sale in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Oceana only".
