EMarkM wrote:Yes, I am. You can get pretty mellow sounds out of an SG, but you can get that out of most guitars imo. Les Paul easily beats SG at mellow sound (as does PRS), while SG easily beats Les Paul at dry'n'dirty hard rock sound. SG's with P90s are great, I once had Duncan P90 clones in my Epi SG and that was definitely powerful. iirc Tony Iommi used a P90 SG on the Black Sabbath debut album. However, since I mostly played thrash and black metal, which means bridge pup + raw gain, single coils aren't ideal for that, both in terms of output and feedback. But to be fair, high output aftermarket pups are best for that, Gibson's HBs lack power there too. I think they mostly shine at low gain blues/rock sounds. With Duncan Black Winters, the SG is a black metal beast. Edited by DrStrangelove at 16:17:51 19-01-2018 |

@DrStrangelove I’m often chasing a Dave Murray sound myself, and usually use neck pickups, even for lead.
It’s just nice to know that there’s a good variety of voicings available from even the simplest of guitar configurations. -
@EMarkM
Yes I guess for Dave Murray sound, P90s are the closest you get with a Gibson. -
Finally got round to contacting Amazon about the dodgy volume pot on my Gibson SG Zebra - replacement guitar is on the way, so good service.
What I *did* notice was that it had gone up in price from the £599 I paid last year to £869 now!
Thought it would be prudent to try and get a replacement just in case Gibbo did go tits-up..not that I can see that happening without a massive fight. -
Update: FOC replacement arrived today - dang, that was fast!
Seems to be all-new (all the box seals were still intact) - just need to check the pots/pickups tonight, then restring and oil the neck if it's good - it's as dry as as a very dry thing. -

Registered 11 years agoI just bought a nylon string classical style guitar.
I love it!
Though it is probably bang out of order that I am using it to bang out a wonky version of that "where did you sleep last night" song by Nirvana. Not sure that's what it was designed for. -

Registered 11 years agoI just played my new acoustic guitar version of "where do you sleep last night" to my son.
He ran away.
I said "ok. That wasn't my best. Let me try again"
He said "vbucks" -

Registered 3 years agoHaha. Oh well, those old songs can't really be attributed to the original artist, can they?
Also this post is in no way for me to brag I got a PRS last month -

Registered 3 years agoI still love Harley Benton, and I still got my PRS rip-off HB but the real deal is amazing. I mean, definitely not worth the price differential with your head, but in my heart and fingers it is a joy despite being one of the pikey models -
I bought one of the new fender Mexican strata they brought out last month. It's a brilliant guitar, the value for money is off the charts. Plays better than my sg, love it. -

Registered 13 years agoI've been toying with the idea of getting a strat or an SG for a while ( although very different). What year is your SG, is it pre "Gibson going a bit ropey"? -

Registered 8 years agoI bought a Chapman telecaster rip off a good few years ago. Probably the best electric I've ever played.
If you can Chapman guitars are well worth a fiddling. -

Registered 13 years agoI'd been looking at some of the Chapman stuff, I really liked the original Cap10 model. Now that they have widened their range, I'm not sure I'm that into them. -

My SG is about 12 years old or so (fucking hell!). It’s a fine guitar and to be fair I have a ridiculous gauge of strings on it.

Registered 13 years agoOh nice! So long before Gibson had their quality issues. Maybe a Mex Strat is the way to go then for my next guitar. -

Registered 3 years agoI've got a couple of years old Gibson at the peak of when they had 'quality issues' and, obviously I got lucky, but it doesn't seem badly made in comparison to friends who have much older ones. I guess the proof is in how it ages, but I still love the robo tuners, even if they are kinda gimmicky -

Registered 13 years agoYeah, the consistency issues were the concern. I played a few which just felt janky and unfinished, but a mate had one with the robot tuning which was phenomenal. -

Registered 3 years agoYeah, and I do know shitty workmanship on guitars, I've made a few planks
I'm a bit of an obsessive with binding and dot positioning. If that's fucked and not centered (on a premium guitar), then forget about the rest of it -
