I think Futurama has the best social commentary out of all of them. The way that they can make up where our society is headed and yet it still hits close to home is the best thing about it.
Family Guy's got the biggest gut laughs of all the cartoons though.
South Park's good too, getting very tired I feel though, you can tell that they're now relying very heavily on getting stories from gossip mags to base episodes on now. -

The trick is, it's still a valid social commentary (as far as such animated series can be, anyway) despite the future backdrop. It's heavily based on the idea that the more things change, the more they stay the same. It also introduced a whole new level, this time more tailored toward geekdom (there's a load of Mac references for starters).
I've never really got into Futurama, it's vaguely funny but setting it in the far future does away with all those clever social comments that you get in the Simpsons, so while being amusing it misses out on a whole level of depth that you have in the Simpsons. I admit I haven't watched the Simpsons for a few years now but the first few years of the Simpsons were unbelievably good.
The problem with The Simpsons was that after that great period the show went downhill by becoming too abstract. That's another great thing about Futurama - the writers get away with a lot more than they would had they retained the "our current times" setting.

Registered 17 years agoIn the far future, the Simpsons will be remembered. Anything like Family Guy, where the humor relies on pop-culture references of the day, will be forgotten. Those kinds of jokes are funny, but they don't last forever. -

Registered 17 years agoI'd say South Park makes me laugh harder and more regularly than the others. The Simpsons, I'm pretty sick of to be honest, though the odd classic reminds me of how good it can be. Futurama I've seen less than all the others but enjoyed lots every single time. And Family Guy is always watchable, but very hit and miss. Occasionally hilarious, occasionally not funny at all. I do love Stewie as a character though. -

Simpsons should have stopped after series 11.
Interesting thing here is that Simpsons and Family Guy are both way past their best, but Futurama was cut down it its prime. I wonder that if Futurama had gone on for another few years and got really shit, would people still think it's the best?
We may get that answer at Christmas, if the new episodes aren't very good.
Well, I think the last series of Futurama was definitely getting weaker as a whole. There are epsidoes on my series 4 DVD boxset that I just don't like, whereas I'd happily watch every episode of series 1,2 and 3.
I wish they'd just leave it and not make any more to be honest. I'd be genuinely upset if it becomes like the Simpsons... -

There's still a chance of that happening with the new eps.

Registered 15 years agoListening to Matt Groening on the commentaries (yes, I'm that sad) he also seems to have a big soft spot for Futurama.
I think he knows deep down that The Simpsons has been ruined. -

I sued to think that a couple of years ago, then I grew up, things didn't shock me as much, I appreciaed the jokes, and found it fucking hilarious. Give it some time I say. -
I do quite like Futurama, but it has a kind of smug knowing thing going on which puts me off a bit. It’s the geeky thing I think. I know that’s what makes it good, but I do prefer the general tone of the Simpsons, or at least I did.
I think it’s a bit unfair to call South Park unsubtle. It can be sure, but it generally knows when to bang the drum loudly and when to attack something by stealth. I think for the most part it’s extremely clever, although recent series too tend to be entirely about topical things, whereas they used to just take the piss out of Barbara Streisand or Manga or something for no reason. -

No he's not. I don't like SP either. The only episode I liked was in season 1 (IIRC), the one where Kenny doesn't die at the end.

Does anyone else think that Zapp Brannigan is one of the best characters ever created? ANYONE? -

I disagree, I thought it was getting progressively better the whole way through, culminating in one of the best episodes ever (The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings). The Sting and The Farnsworth Parabox were two episodes right at the end of S4 that were up there with the very best. Three Hundred Big Boys is also a very popular episode. Jurassic Bark (my favourite episode) is in season 4, as well as Leela's Homeworld and Obsoletely Fabulous.
In fact, I'd say S4 is probably the best of the lot.
Those episodes are very good (Farnsworth Paradox is one of my favourite episodes ever come to think of it), but I just found that series 4 had more episodes that I don't particularly like than other series.
Futurama is still better than Simpsons or Family Guy. -

But isn't sci-fi often used as a device for emphasising contemporary social issues and trends? Or, failing that, the universal cultural truisms which we can recognise in our own society?
Having been fortunate to nab the entire four seasons of it cheaply on DVD years ago, I've become irrevocably enchanted by Futurama, and so I involuntarily urge any doubters to reconsider using my most pompous and condescending talk words.
Anyway, I love all three series, and South Park too. To answer the question though, it has to be The Simpsons. The episodes in and around Season 8 have set a standard unsurpassed by anything to date. In newer seasons, though, it's become clichéd and even preachy. And when Family Guy was brought back into production, it seemed to substitute plainly unpleasant offensiveness with actual humour for the most part. I think it's been improving more recently though.
In conclusion:
"Egh, that's the saltiest thing I've ever tasted! And I once ate a big heaping bowl of salt!" - Philip J. Fry -

I agree, but Simpsons has all the satire of futurama and much more on the family unit, community/social life etc...
