So, what's the set-up you need? I don't have an Airport Base Station as my superfast broadband requires the special router that Be provided (a Speedtouch router). Does that matter?
Oh, and is your house basically a walk-in Apple showroom??

I just realized that I have one of those Airport Express thingys. I never really thought about what I could do with it. So far I've only been using it to recharge my iPod shuffle.^^ -

I don't know. I can't remember buying it. -

No, I don't drink at all.
I thing I got it for free, because I don't need at all and I don't usually buy things I dont need. -
Right, I've just read the Apple blurb for the Airport Express thingy and I don't get why it's 'perfect for life on the go'. Why exactly would one take this to a hotel or something with you?
And how does it extend the range of your existing network? Is it in case you want to be 200 metres from your router but your computer only reaches 100 metres wirelessly so you can pop the Express in the midpoint?
Also, seems like a fucking expensive toy to plop around the house for printing wirelessly etc. Seems more like a luxury than in any way a necessity. Then again, if I had £200 to spunk in Apple's face I'd probably buy three.
Furthermore, the reports continue to flood into the product page that it has about 12-18 months use in it before dying. Not good enough, that.

I guess I'd only use it for wireless music streaming, that's all. My flat's not big enough to have dead spots wirelessly, and as my computer sits about 24 inches above my printer whenever I'm actually printing a USB cable is fine really...

Are you sure you need a 'special' router? I just plugged my AE straight into my modem via ethernet, and it worked a treat. (20meg Cable).

Only reason I can think of is many hotel rooms still only have ethernet broadband, which chains you to the desk. Pop the Ethernet into the AE, and you can sit on the bed.

Yes, exactly.

It's an excellent broadband router, a wireless bridge and an Airtunes enabled audio sender - what more do you want for £60!?

As for the modem thing, yes apparently we do need to use their specific router. It's BeUnlimited, an 11mb speed ('up to' 24mb) and something to do with ADSL2 or something means that at the moment as far as I know we have to use the router they provide.

Registered 15 years agoI've tried reading all them posts up there and it's got me head in mess, and I've got a Airport Express.
Just buy one, they're mint.
I use mine with me broadband. It's plugged directly into my cable modem thingy from Telewest/Virgin and provides wireless access for the whole flat.
I also use Airfoil. With that I can stream music from any source on my Mac to the Airport Express. So I get iTunes, input from my decks, last.fm, all of that, straight through to my stereo.
I've been considering using Clicker to remote control iTunes so I don;t have to walk, ooooh, 5 metres to change a track but I'm a) too cheap to buy it, because b) my phone doesn't support it. -

Ah, yes, sorry, didn't realise it was relevant. Yes it is. So, I could of course get an Airport Extreme and wazz it onto the router and do a DOUBLE router, which could then feed the Express. But like I say, no need in our pokey London-sized flat. When we turn on the Airport on the powerbook we already detect 3 other networks called boring things like BTHomehub-5778 and BTHomehub-7500.

Hmm, seems very odd. Unless it's a router/modem combi of course!
Ours is called JediCouncil, and my Powerbook is JediMaster.

I should probably name the 360 and the Wii other similarly themed things.gif)

I literally just bought Clicker. It was so phenomenally cool when I saw that it actually worked that I bought it without a moments hesitation, and normally I hesitate and then don't bother buying stuff like that.

It's fucking great..gif)
I should probably buy an Airport Express now, to justify the £15 purchase of clicker... Irony?
Still not impressed by those numerous reports of the sucker burning itself out. Fuck having to unplug it every time you finish using it. -
Okay, so an Express unit plus Airfoil means I can send sound from TV shows, movies etc from my Mac to my speakers.
All I need now is a way of transmitting the video itself to my LCD and I'm beginning to build my wireless home of my dreams (oh, and building a cancer-emitting hellhouse for any future Spawn of Owen & Hollie, of course...) -

And it's like £60. That's not really a lot of money for a wireless access point and wireless music streaming thinger. -
Oh sdon't worry, since I got Clicker and discovered Airfoil, that Express is so bought. It's just a matter of when (tomorrow, to make my day off feel like I achieved something heh).
About the router/bridge thing, deem - like you say it's a moot point, but anyway what I meant was it can only work as a bridge (apparently) if it's bridging to an Airport Extreme. Someone's made it work to a specific Linksys but I'm stuck with a BeUnlimited branded Speedtouch due to the nature of the way Be provide their internet. Hence as it stands I couldn't use the Express as a bridge, but I don't need to so it's fine.
Now about that wireless video transmitter/reciever?

Eh? Sorry mate I know it doesn't matter, but I'm a bit puzzled ... I guess perhaps I don't really know what you mean by bridge, but I've plugged my Express into ... oh ... probably 4 ADSL modems now without problems. Why would it matter? (I'm pretty sure I'm missing something) -
Yeah I don't really get this either. I'm using mine as a bridge too. I assume your computer just plugs into the modem/router via ethernet right? So replace that connection with the AirPort Express and it's the same thing as a computer plugging into it. Where's the problem? -
Sorry, not explaining myself properly. I think my use of the word 'bridge' is what's causing the problem. I mean 'enhancer'.
I already have a wireless connection. The Be box is a modem and router in one. I was talking about using the Express to enhance the range of the wireless network - which I don't need to do because our flat has complete coverage. The Express plugged in somewhere halfway between the router and the Mac won't work unless it's an Airport Extreme it's connecting to and bouncing the signal on from. -
Ah, that eternal conundrum - bus to Cancom and pay £70 plus bus fair to Kensington, or order from Apple for £65 delivered but have no idea when it will arrive and whether or not I'll be in to receive it because it won't fit through the letterbox...

Ah - okay, that makes more sense. -
After a slight disappointment that I couldn't easily watch movies in bed on my laptop with sound blasting through Airfoil to my AirTunes-enabled speakers either side of the bed without faffing around in VLC every five minutes trying to re-sync the sound with the pictures, I'm very pleased that Airfoil 3 now does it for you!
Have yet to test it though.
Tested, works fucking perfectly. AWESOME. -

Oooh! I bought an airport express to do just that, then found that it had a stupid delay and wasn't worth worrying about.
Let me know if it works.
