Decided I am going to switch to Mac for my next computer and been watching new iMac rumours with interest. Seems the current versions are starting to become tricky to get hold of in shops - Dixons online are sold out. Other places have stock warnings. Hopefully Apple are just waiting for the iPhone stuff to settle down before an announcement.

We have a thread discussion going on exactly this question over in the EGMUG group which I encourage you to join. :)

The current money is on new iMacs in September... I think they'd be unlikely to announce something in July or August as things are so quiet then, but hey, what do I know? In any case, it does look like a new iMac soonish so I'd hold on for now.

They may try and co-ordinate it with the start of the the US college year, which is a big computer buying period.

They have to do something this year as Steve has promised all Macs will have LED backlit screens.

Get a Macbook. I got one last week and I love it.

I want a desktop replacement. Part of my reasoning is that I have a nice new work laptop to satisfy most of my windows needs.

My hopeful money is on late July - meets the start of US college year and also ties in with a reduction in price for certain Intel CPU's. Will head over to the EGMUG group :)

Got a 20" last week, so Steve Jobs can kiss my ass. It is lovely though, no idea what they could do to improve it (slightly thinner maybe?)

Steve is a bit too obsessed with 'thinness' these days, I really can't see why the iMac needs to be any thinner. It needs to look less 'chinny' if you ask me.

I'm still waiting and have been since the strong rumours emerged for the new iMac range since last September.

Im a buyer for an Apple reseller in Ireland. No shipments on iMac in 8 weeks. this is normal when they are going to launch a new model. No ETA on the new one though, smart guess would suggest mid august.

Thanks. Oh and Steve says your sacked.

Don't pin your hopes on anything before September. I've been following the rumours for weeks now as I need a desktop too and I want a new iMac. Apple are in Paris in September doing something but Steve has called a press conference which he will present from San Fran, and have streamed live to London.

Probably going to be Leopard and new iMacs announced simultaneously.

Ah well, scrap that idea then. :)

But my money still on September for the unveiling of the iMacs.

If they're going to release new ones surely they should come with Leopard pre-loaded?

Well that's what I was thinking.

Is November 1st an official, named date for Leopard?

Actually, what with the iBook being renamed MacBook and Powerbook being renamed Macbook Pro, and the existence of the Mac Pro range, what's the odds they're going to finally drop the iMac and just release a 'Mac' again? :)

Well, the original Macintosh was just a 'Mac'.

It would fit with the rebranding they've done so far. At the moment the iMac is the only one that doesn't fit.

Am I the only one that wants a touchscreen Mac Laptop (possibly using similar technology to the iPhone's screen)?

I dunno, not really interested in the Mac Mini. But pretty much everyone that seems to have an idea about these things says it is, same as the death of the 17" iMac, apparently.

ThinkSecret have reported (a-fuggin-gain) that there will be brushed alumin(i)um iMacs released in August. Personally I think that's bullshit. Apple keep their new designs locked up tighter than Fort Knox inside Fort Knox inside Fort Knox, so there's no way anybody would have an inkling of the design.

Plus, that's not a very imaginative re-invention if it's just going to be a slightly thinner screen in aluminium. I hope it will be something drastically exciting, personally, not to mention much faster than current iMacs.

I'd like to think they'll lob 2GB of RAM into it as well, but it being their 'consumer' model ostensibly, I have a horrible feeling they won't.

It would be so unwieldy though, having to stretch out with your hand all the time to put fingerprints all over the screen. The useage of a phone lends itself to touch screen tech, but I wouldn't say any kind of computer does with the present form factors.

If they did it like a drawing board it could work though. It'd get the Apple fanboys drooling at any rate!

Yeah. I used a wacom cintiq a few years back - essentially a 17" touchscreen that you could place horizontally a la huge touch screen. It was mainly designed for graphic guys using illustrator and in now way was it user friendly when using finder, browsing the web etc.

What it says on the tin - updates bring speed increases. I'm sure they're shit hot fast right now, but imagine what an update would bring to them. Not having a go, hold your horses fella.
