Anyone got a Nokia E65?

Don't fancy the shite battery life of the N95, or half the features on it (no need for MP3 player, or 5MP camera, or SatNav, or any of that crap), but I do fancy the Wi-Fi. Personally I'd be happy with the 6300 but the gadget boy in me really wants that Wi-Fi...

So, the E65 - any good?

E65 still has shite battery life.

The wifi is pretty nifty but combined with a terrible battery life(even worse when you use wifi) and an interface that is unintuitive beyond belief makes for a pretty pish phone.

I loved it for the first week or so then got royally fed up and went back to SE.

yeah i was wanting to know that myself as it is the only one next to the n95 that takes my fancy - but after the n80 i am very nervous about the n95. the E65 also comes in red which i like. I had a quick play with one in the shop the other day and it seemed fine. Nice bright screen- lots of features it just had that ery clinical business feel about it. But thats probably just me.

Still got my eyes on the red one though.

Ah well fuckit. 6300 for me. I just wish they wouldn't tie you into an 18 month contract these days, it's fucking shite. I'm out of contract period now so I can do what I like, and I'd wait for the iPhone (I'm on o2) but I don't see the attraction in paying full whack for the phone and then STILL getting hit with the massive tarriffs and data charges and long contracts.

I mean, aren't the tarriffs and long contracts supposed to be so they can offer phones at discounted or free prices?

I quite like mine. But it's far from intuitive.
Don't use phone a lot but only have to charge it every 3-4 days.

    That 6300 any good, then?

I had the 6300 and the '8' key came off, but as I am a very heavy texter (30 -50 a day) it could have happened to any phone really.

Gone back to using phones with flat keypads, al la Motorola.

I've got an E65 and no real complaints about the battery life. Use it just as a normal phone (calls, texts etc) and you'll get 3/4 days between charges.

You can easilly shrink it down to a day if you use all the bells and whistles. When I first got it I was streaming digital radio in the morning whilst I got ready for work, using the GPS on the way to work, having it constantly connected checking my emails whilst at work, streaming Sky to it during my lunch hour, GPSing my way home and then messing about with the odd game or whatever in the evening. That dropped it down to one bar.

Anyway, my point is, the phone is superb, slim and feature-packed. Hammer it and it'll use up power quickly, but using it as a phone it'll last as long as most phones out there (you've just got the added advantage of more features when you need them).

    Highly recommended.

In fact, I've just checked it. Charged it last night. Listened to the radio for 30mins this morning, used it to check emails during the day, took 4 short calls (about 30mins total) and sent 3 texts. It's dropped down one of the 6 bars.

I read in some reviews that the power rating got better after a couple of full rundowns and recharges. I doubted this but it really does seem to last longer, that or I'm abusing it less as it's not totally new anymore.

I love my E65. Menu's are a bit poop and the battery life is around 3 days max with day to day use. But the shit it can do! Yeehaa, and its a nice size and weight for the functions it packs. I cangoogle map Hastings in New Zealand! wifing while I wait is awesome, it is a beast!

    Awesome phone!

Hmm, the E65 pops back up to the top of the list. 2 days or more without charging on average use (ie, calls and texts and occasional email checking via the Googlemail app I consider to be absolutely fine.

What's this about shite menus though? Doesn't it run the custom-moveable icons-in-a-grid Symbian menu system like the 6680 etc?
  • Deleted user 17 July 2007 10:53:21
Hang on, the E65 does GPS?

Are you sure you're not talking about the N95??

Nokia nowadays have shite battery life imo. I've tried leaving bluetooth off for 2 days and making minimal calls/texts and using no multimedia functions... it was dead within 36 hours. I've tried with multiple batteries too, including a month old one.

    Using an N70 btw.

Yeah, seriously, zero complaints about the battery life here.

As for the menus, not got a problem with them at all. It's symbian, but still no issues. I've not seen the 6680 so can't compare. Try one instore.

Well, sorta. It runs TomTom and various other GPS software apps, however you'll still need a bluetooth GPS receiver. I had one built into my motor, so it's always there when I need it.

Right well I'm about to call O2 and "see what they can do" for me.

Still, the only real difference in terms of useability (that I'll make use of really!) between this and the altogether nicer and smaller 6300 is the WiFi. Does the WiFi come in handy, really? You need access to a WiFi point to use it.

    What a horrid phone.

Am interested in how people 'wifi' on the move - I'd have thought that's actually nigh on impossible without paying extra to access commercial wifi networks.

For me the wifi feature is very useful. Being at uni and living not far from campus means i get exchange email/internet access everywhere i go. I'm about to subscribe to the wifi service that major train stations provide as i'm on the move quite alot lately.

Also you can get games and apps without having to pay the horrid data charges.

I use Wifi a lot when I'm at home, it's faster than 3G see. If you've not got a wifi access point then it'll be of little use to you I should imagine.

Why wouldn't you use your computer at home???

I'm on O2 and the best package they do for data is 4MB for £5 a month. T-Mobile do unlimited for £7.50, but their regular tariffs are embarrassingly shite compared to O2's.

All I want a phone to do is be able to surf the net reasonably well (anything that runs Opera Mini can do that, but I need t a good data tariff really), be able to deliver my email to my phone or at least allow me to use the Gmail mobile app (in association with a good data tariff, of course), make calls, send texts etc.

I'd like it to have enough RAM to not lock the fuck up whenever I try to run two things at once, like the 6680 does.

    Don't need a radio, don't need an MP3 player, don't need GPS, don't need a camera.

The only good thing I found was that you can use your E65 as a skype phone at home.
  • Deleted user 17 July 2007 15:34:38
I could use my own WiFi network to control my Mac from an E65 using Clicker (more reliably so than using Bluetooth which can flake out if I try to use it in the bedroom when the Mac is in the lounge) but other than that there's not much I anticipate being able to use the WiFi for.

If I can get a decent data deal out of O2 then I might just stick with the 6300.

Well I can use Skype at home using the phone rather than messing about with a mic & speakers. Plus it's handy to check emails without having to boot up a PC. Also, I can stream video/music to the phone using my wireless connection, which is handy for bedtime/toilet viewing.

Price up Three. They're signal is pretty damn good before (I used them a while ago, and they were bad, but now the issue seems to be resolved) and their data tariff is only £5 a month unlimited.

You'll go over 4mb very quickly I'd expect.

Their talk and text deals are shit.
  • Deleted user 17 July 2007 15:40:30
I've just got an E65, I'm still coming to terms with the technology packed in it, and the battery life seems awesome.

For me, the wi-fi is all but made unnecessary as I've subscribed to the Three thing that gives me unlimited browsing, plus SlingBox and Skype.

Battery life seems pretty darn good so far. Pleased with it, it's my first Symbian phone for a good while, it seems to have ironed out a lot of the bugs. Plus the coverage seems a lot better here.
  • Deleted user 17 July 2007 15:43:57
What are you paying a month, and what do you get for that?

I'm not convinced that Three's coverage is really that good once you leave a city.
