Registered 17 years agoParamount are in financial trouble. They got a fuckton of cash from Netflix so they sold it. More of this will happen as Annihilation is also Netflix only too. -

Registered 5 years agoMan, if anyone thought 10 Cloverfield Lane felt like it was blatantly a different movie with the Cloverfield stuff shoehorned in, then they're gonna hate this. It felt like channel surfing between two unrelated films. -

Registered 5 years agoThat was beyond terrible. Tonally all over the place, bizarre leaps of logic, ridiculous cliches and a tie-in so tenuous you can virtually see the editing seams. -

Registered 17 years agoColverfield 4 has already been made and is due out later this year. It’s set during WW2.

I thought the first was decent. I really enjoyed 10 Lane. VEry much liked the idea of Cloverfield as an anthology series, a Tales from the crypt / Amazing Stories sort of thing.

Registered 16 years agoWhat it appears to be is Abrams’ McGuffin. Can’t think of a way to finish that idea off? Stuck for ideas about what happens when your hostage escapes? What’s a god particle anyway? Well worrry no more: Just add Cloverfield! -

Registered 18 years agoI've given up on trying to understand what a McGuffin is. Everyone seems to be using it in slightly different ways. -

Registered 19 years agoHmm. I mean, it explains where the monster came from at least. Even if it is incredibly iffy with more hand waving than a state visit from the centipede king.
The thing that splashed into the ocean in the background in the first movie was the space station.
Haven't finished watching it yet, I'm about 20 minutes from the end, so we'll see. -

Registered 19 years agoOh, okay. Ignore my spoiler, it's not even close - it should have been, that might have even made a modicum of sense. -
Shame the reviews I've seen are shit. The first 2 in the franchise are both excellent, had high hopes. Will be watching it tonight either way. -

Registered 19 years agoYeah, it's nothing alike in terms of tone, setting, structure and so on, but if you put that aside it's an okay watch. It's a bit confused, it's not sure what to be and some of the casting choices are naff. -
To each their own I suppose, I loved the original. As kaiju movies go, it beats the hell out of Godzilla and Pacific Rim IMO, and maybe only The Host is comparable in the past decade or so. I never saw the fuss with that film either. -
Why do people keep saying that "Cloverfield" is a cinematic universe?
The films are completely unrelated.
You could call the next episode of Eastenders "Cloverfield" and it would somehow be canon.
That's two films now that started out as original scripts and have been shoehorned into... I dunno.
The last film was actually very good and succeeded on its own merit. Tacking it on as a semi-sequel/prequel/whatever actually undermines it.

So not really relevant to the Cloverfield series then?
A macguffin is generally an object everyone is trying to get, that drives the plot. Eg, Ark of the Covenant, Philosopher's Stone, Jewel of the Nile, Maltese Falcon. It could be a person or arguably a specific outcome, eg Get Shorty, kill Hitler, lose virginity. -

Registered 16 years agoIt’s something tacked onto a story which only serves to drive the plot, usually without much explanation as to why it’s there or why it’s so important. Just like the original film “Cloverfield” has been tacked onto the two subsequent films

Having had a little time to digest it, I've come to the conclusion that it makes no sense whatsoever, it's not even a fucking paradox in any sense of the word.
