    ...yay!

But he is played by Harry Enfield!

Still, the glass is half full at the moment.

aweee, well maybe it'll be good but i was hoping if they did it they'd pick someone with a harder more cynical edge

Harry Enfield recently went on stage with a shoebox of ashes, claimed it was Diana, poked a hole in it and explained how now he could 'fuck Diana'.

    Harry Enfield should fuck off.

    She wasn't even cremated.

Didn't the books describe him as the sort of chap with whom you might have difficulty identifying whch country he came from?

    Only heard about this now!
I really liked the Dirk Gently books...

Often when trying to get somewhere, but not knowing exactly where it is I use Dirk's theory of just following another car...

    Doesn't always work though...

Definitely not appeee about Enfield being Dirk Gently.

I reckon Jim Broadbent would've been better.

It'll be on Listen Again for a week too.
I've not read the books, so I'm coming to this in the same unspoiled state I came to Hitchhikers. =)

TV adaptation due later in the year. I'm not too hopeful.
  • Deleted user 25 August 2010 21:35:03
Well it's BBC4, which makes me a bit hopeful. Only a bit though.

@coastal- the Harry Enfield thing was on radio a few years ago, check the posting dates. I don't think he's involved with this one (at least I hope not).

I just can't see how this is going to work. Mangan seems a decent choice though.

Are they doing the whole of the first book in the initial episode, then? Or are we just getting a bit of it? Or is it not based on the book at all?

I always pictured Colin Firth as Dirk Gently.

Edit: But Mangan would also do :)

After the fucking travesty that was the H2G2 film why can't you leave Adams's memory alone you bastards?

I read the interview in SFX... well we're changing the story... and the characters...

JUST FUCK OFF AND DIE, EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU THAT'S INVOLVED IN THIS!!!!!

I'm starting to think that you consider actually reading Adams' book to be only borderline acceptable and would really prefer people to put them in a case and worship them;)

Why do you care if someone does a bad adaptation? It's not as if you're being forced to sit and watch it and doubt if it would put off someone who was interested in the books to begin with.

boo may be a bit over the top, but i am starting to agree with him.

DDHDA and TLDTTOTS are 2 of the best book of all time imo and i really hope they dont screw this up..!

Surely if you enjoy a book and find out there's going to be a TV version it is only natural to want to watch and enjoy it.

This could be different and still be good. Some stories and authors, though, achieve a kind of cult worship status that makes it impossible for any kind of interpretation that does not slavishly follow the original to work.

Edit: My last paragraph is completely self-contradictory. Can anything that inspires this level of cognitive dissonance be good? Can anything that inspires this level of cognitive dissonance be anything but good?
