So I just got back from the gym after my first deadlift / squat session since shattering my hip socket. Pretty much just the bar to start with (1 plate on deadlift)... and I'm really not sure what to make of how it went.

Firstly, good news in that my deadlift feels like I've still got the movement patterns (just about)... even though obviously I'm lifting next to nothing.

However, bad news is that the nerve damage in my upper leg / hip now makes it extremely hard to work out if I'm moving evenly / properly engaging muscles. Squat felt especially strange, in that I'm pretty certain the bar was moving a lot further forward than it might have in the past... but then it's got no weight on it, so... I don't know.

Some mild pain, but I don't think I damaged anything. Some clicking of tendons in places, but I don't think it's anything to be concerned about.

Amusingly I noticed when setting up that at some point I've managed to bend my (shitty) deadlift bar. I'd buy a new one, but I really don't think I ever need to be concerned about lifting that sort of weight again.

It doesn't sound like you should even be using a bar for squats yet, let alone adding weight to it brah

I've been doing hundreds of bodyweight squats over the last few months, also walking lunges. Definitely not rushing into this.

I have a new program to start in Jan, so I need to test my maxes over the next 10 days. Problem is that Iíve not been lifting for a few months so theyíre going to suck and will destroy me.

I've gained about 4 kilos of christmas podge, which is not surprising but is annoying. 92.8kg on the scales this morning. Is anyone else fat now?

No, but this is a recent development as per last year and being booze free. Two years ago it was a different story altogether.

Also, fucking hell, 4 kilos. That's incredible

The kickboxing gym I go to has been closed since the 21st and doesn't open again until Monday so I've had fuck all exercise since then. Feeling rundown and jiggly. My arms and shoulders are feeling flaccid too. Not sure about the weight though, I haven't weighed myself in years.

We need someone like heyyo! to keep us documented with photos of his torso again after a few press ups for inspiration.

Donít think I gained anything, got a lot of cycling notched up over the break and didnít go toooo mad with consumption so should be a touch lighter if anything

@smoothpete roughly 6 pounds added on, all around my cheeks and mid riff. I could tell in some of the Christmas photos I had added a bit but the scales just confirmed this. I drank the last of the beer in the fridge last night so will stay dry for the month which will also help me maintain a good eating habit.

I've just spent 3 days at my sister's, and the water in her area plays havoc with my guts. Hoping the same tbh. Going to take a few weeks off the booze, cut out the crap and try and get things back under control.

I went to a nutritionist once and she said the same. Apparently even though water thatís been through the sewage system is potable, it still contains a lot of chlorine and other chemicals that can play havoc with the microsystem in our gut.

She recommended only drinking bottled water but that seemed a bit much (and a bit harsh on the environment). I did get a water filter though. Maybe just buy a big five litre bottle of water next time you go round.

Yeah, I usually do take loads with me, but forgot this time. Only drank filtered water too and it was still bad. Only put 2 and 2 together when she said the same thing happened to a friend of hers.

    Weighed myself today too.

Only 0.5 kg up, so I'll take that. I've still been running & gyming a bit over the hols, and not really gone for the gusto this year.

Older age maybe does have some slight benefit.

Will hit the gym again tomorrow am and see how many new year's resolution peeps i can spot in there.
