The new game by id is "Rage" - apparently they've ditched the darkness for the outdoors and it's looking "Motorstorm-esque". Live Quakecon keynote coverage |

Registered 18 years agoSounds like a great idea but why always a manky wasteland and/or grimy industrial setting?
Does 'brighter' in this case mean 'outside during daylight hours'? -

Why is it being called 'debut' when we've already seen a video of it in action?
Rage Debut Trailer
Pretty good looking. If you like brown.
BROWNLOL!
Granted this new video is more 'game specific' but still. All very swish. -

It would appear so.
But a post-apocalypse driving-shooter with proper inventory etc? Sounds like Fallout 3 on steroids to me.

Looks really interesting.
Still has a "seen it all before" vibe, though. -
Hm, kinda makes me think of Motorstorm crossed with Oddworld Stranger. Seems like some nice ideas but the snippets of first person action still look very Doom-esque - i.e. enemies running at you flailing the whole time.
Hard to really tell much from the trailer though. -

Apart from the fact that the technology clearly kicks arse. Which was kinda the aim really.

I dunno. It's hard to really tell the specifics of what the engine does well. Yes there's some pretty environments but aside from a general level of graphical competence that doesn't really tell me much about the engine at all.
Don't get me wrong though, I expect it will be very good tech. -

I'm presuming with the next generation of engines - the question will be less "What does it do well?" and more "What it doesn't do well?". The previous demo showcased open expansive environments, whith this illustrating character models and animation plus some nifty rendering and lighting effects.

I'm sure they'll release a PDF soon enough, but as an 'impression' of what games will look like on the engine I thought it was quite effective myself. -

Registered 18 years agoYeah, surprisingly brown for a game that's supposed to be brighter, but still pretty cool. I can't think of any game that does something similar right now.
My real worry is that it looked a bit like the driving area was very confined. I didn't see much open space, all the driving seemed to take place on roads - larger corridors but still corridors. -

It's too brown and yet Nintendo is too colourful.
There are vast, expansive outdoor regions and yet it is somehow restricted to corridors.

Fuck you! When did I say Nintendo is too colorful?
And the problem is I didn't see vast outdoor areas. The whole thing took place in a canyon. How is that my fault? -

Registered 18 years agolooks good if its kinda free roaming with the buggies and not just specific times when you have to use one. i hate stupid driving sections in the middle of otherwise fps games. -

Also a better Fallout than Fallout.
The guys over at GFW were laughing at this for the ridiculous weapons. Because there's so many (over half a million) they are procedurally developed meaning the computer comes up with some really strange designs.
Still, I thought the video looked great. Perhaps a little clunky but it's still a while from release and has lots of time to be sorted out.
I wouldn't say it's what fallout should have been, it looks much more streamlined than fallout. More shooter than RPG but for me that's a better combination, still, I look forward to both.

+1.
I've travelled in the wasteland an awful lot this year - both Borderlands and Rage aren't lighting my candle at the moment...
.... except for that big fucker at the end! -

Registered 14 years agoHaven't really followed this game much, is it a linear type thing? Or did you get a choice where to go and what to do when you get there?
It does look terribly like Fallout 3 with cars though, but I guess they have been making this for years... -

Motorstorm + Twisted Metal + Fallout 3 = Rage -
I'm liking the look of this.
The fact that it almost fills a BR disc is enough to make me believe it's going to be a HUGE game.
