Well it looks like the world's best boy band are finally calling it a day. They may have lost some of their live energy a good few years ago but I never got sick of seeing them 20+ times.

Aww, the one time I saw Slayer live - in 2002 not long after Lombardo rejoined, they were poop.

They were alright when I saw them a few years ago. Best of the Big Four, easily.

I've seen Slayer live so many times I have no idea how many... But they're decent 80% of the time for sure!

Am I right in thinking that King and Araya have basically been colleagues rather than bandmates proper for ages now?

Like wasn't there something about one having alt righty sounding stuff put on their social media and the other having it taken down?

Araya has been pretty candid that it's just a job for him for some time now.

Yep, and a job he doesn't want to do anymore.

Bummer I didn't enjoy them live that time as I've seen some blistering live footage and for my money they have more classic albums than Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax combined

Everyone else secretly agrees with me that slow Slayer is the best, right?

@simpleexplodingmaybe yes and no. Silent scream and dittohead can't be beaten, but I did have dead skin mask opening verse as part of my wedding vows.

Definitely, and iirc Araya sounded like he hasn't been very motivated to continue with Slayer for years, especially after Hanneman's death, while King seems as eager and energetic as ever.

Like wasn't there something about one having alt righty sounding stuff put on their social media and the other having it taken down?
On inauguration day, Araya posted a picture of the band with Trump badly photoshopped in on the band's instagram, which was deleted again soon after. Apparently he didn't know who deleted it and also didn't think it might have been someone else in the band, and ranted against the "snowflakes" who complained, said it was just for fun and the USA had become a nation of "crybabies". He also made a joke about Pence "turning fruits into vegetables" on Twitter (a reference to Pence's ideas of "healing" homosexuals).

As ever, Slayer and politics is a confusing matter. In interviews, Araya often comes across as a super cool guy while King has raised suspicions about being a right-wing idiot in the past. Now King condemns police brutality against African Americans, and before the election he said Trump was the biggest liar in politics he'd ever seen and that the only safe and correct option would be Clinton. He apparently also wrote an anti-Trump song he's eager to record. Gary Holt condemned Trump too.

What do you reckon happens after Slayer?

Araya quits music to spend more time with Jesus and King forms a supergroup with Chris Jericho and Scott Ian?

I haven't seen them as often as I thought I had. They were amazing when I saw them in '87 and '88, but I don't think I saw them again until something like 2010. And honestly I haven't listened to anything they've released in at least the last 20 years, bar the odd song.

Still kinda sad to know they're finally packing it in though.

Sin After Sin might just be Judas Priest's most under-rated album.

And thinking about it, Diamonds & Rust might be their best track. Well, among their best. It's an incredible cover, whichever way you shake it.

Also, I hope I have the stones to wear red leather chaps when I'm in my 60s.

Holy shit, the new machine head is terrible. Like, Burning Red/Supercharger bad. Like, Bloodstone and Diamonds was crap because it half the tracks were just boring and shit. But this is a complete and utter dumpster fire.

On the plus side, new Tribulation is excellent.

Slayer have always been consistent when I've seen them (festivals mainly); march on, efficiently stir up a riot, no gimmicks, just bludgeoning thrash goodness. I'll miss 'em.

Are there any up-and-coming bands pedaling decent thrash? I'm getting a bit out of touch, but I'm keen to get to more gigs this year (Alestorm in Feb and Machinehead in May so far!).

@Chug666 Vektor, Hellripper, Power Trip, Ripper, Terrifier, Reign of Fury might be worth checking out.

@Duffking Great, cheers- good to have a list to try. I have a weekend of painting doors ahead so a thrashy soundtrack will help!

Burning Red is pretty good as far as numetal goes.

Through The Ashes of Empires is the last album that really had any fire for me. The Blackening made all the right moves but just didn't "it" for me and it's been diminishing returns every time I've dipped in since.

They still rip live so got tickets for the next tour and cargo shorts out the loft.

Three songs into Reign of Fury/World Detonation; first impressions are a heady mix of early 80's Metallica and Jett Black. Good noise!

For some reason I really liked the Blackening, at least at the time. I've not really liked them before or since.

@drhickman1983 I even quite like Supercharger... Put off buying it for years due to the amount of hate it gets, when I buckled I had no expectations and was pleasantly surprised that there were a few decent tracks.
