Venturing to the front for nathrakh. Don't normally get this close but I genuinely love these guys...

Baroness released another song- Seasons. I can say, with no reservations, that this one is awesome.

Off to see Cave In / Old Man Gloom / Bossk in London tomorrow night!

Watching Opeth at Red Rocks 'Garden of the Titans' blu ray. I have the bells and whistles art book edition. I know folks have opinions as to their direction and the newer albums etc but goddamn they are a bit special live. Not seen them in person since the Ghost Reveries tour back in the day with the older line up.

Also, and very much an acquired taste, Devin Townsend's 'Empath' is staggering stuff. Like a real summation of his career, but also has it's own vibe I haven't got from any of his other stuff. It's Devin turned up to ten on almost everything though so if his stuff annoys you skip it! Desert island disc for me though for sure, and a bit of escapism into positivity in these pretty dark times we're in.

Stixx I'm gonna try and give Baroness a go this weekend, cheers for the heads up.

Where do I start? They have seven thousand albums on Spotify it seems. Just shuffled played four or five songs of theirs and each song sounds like a different band.

    @Bichii

    Opeth?

For the classic mid period sound try Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park (the latter is better, the former is more accessible and has the 70s keyboards).

If you like those, My Arms Your Hearse is the birth of that sound, and Still Life is where they refined the songwriting.

The first two (Orchid and Morningrise) are more disjointed with a quite different riffing approach (more melo-death with a sort of blackened tinge). Parts don't tend to repeat so they are less 'songy'.

They get more prog rock and drop the gutturals in the later stages. Whilst I think the albums of that period are inconsistent, IMO there is still a lot of great music in all of them, but then I love 70s rock.

Do those mid period ones first, and happy listening.

I'd also add "Watershed" to Opeth's fucking amazing mid period, don't you agree?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll get on it. I've been asleep so haven't seen the posts until now. I'll try one in bed now. Ghost reveries first..

I think My Arms Your Hearse is their best album, but Blackwater Park is their best song. TBH not fussed about anything else on that album.

    Still Life is also brilliant.

In terms of songs I'd say (for death metal opeth)

    Blackwater Park
    Demon of the Fall
    The Moor
    Master's Apprentices

Nope. Think I've done three or four songs off ghost reveries. I'm enjoying the instrumental but God I can't handle and shouting shite and even when it's normal singing the guy is terrible. Shame.

Akerfeldt is objectively a very good singer. Fair enough if you don't like his tone or style but to call him a terrible singer is a bit much lol.

The death metal vox are obviously an acquired taste. I always liked his because you can make out the words!

I love heavy music but can't handle shouting and bad front men. Would rather just the music do the talking with no vocals if it's going to be shouting.

Akerfeldt's growl was one of the best in metal.

I love mid-era Opeth (Ghost Reveries/Blackwater Park). I strongly dislike what they have become, which is an absolute shame.

Luckily, liking the growls in Opeth got me into Swallow the Sun, and their new album looks like it's a fucking banger.

Is it a bit more inspired than the last one? Thought that one was pretty forgettable, so forgettable I can't remember what it was called.
