Isn't that the mixing?? I've read many bands be extremely complimentary about him helping gel everything together in some classic albums.

    @Bichii

Yeah in classic albums, but later it just got worse and worse, just makes my ears hurt. Death Magnetic and World Painted Blood are nice examples.

'tis a real pity about World Painted Blood as it's actually a really good album.

Conversely, Repentless is crapola but sounds decent.

I was enjoying some Howling Void on the drive in - the vocals aren't great but I love the melodic guitar wank :-)

@simpleexplodingmaybe saw these guys live at arctangent last summer, they were great and very entertaining.... Only gripe is they're a bit too samey.

Going to see Obituary do Cause of Death tonight - should be good!

It was originally booked in a tiny venue, which would have been amazing, but obviously it sold out so quickly that they had to move it.

Cause of Death is hands down their best album, in a large part due to James Murphy's lead playing... I wonder do they do it justice (who even plays lead with them these days?).

When I saw them at Bloodstock in 2017 they were pretty on point. In fact I've seen them at Bloodstock three times and they were great each time.

Nice. For various reasons I've missed them every chance I've had, including two times I've had tickets (one headline gig, then in 2018 with Slayer).

Greg Fidelman, the engineer, is responsible for the sound of those brickwalled albums. Rubin doesn't do anything technical or hands on in the albums, he acts like some kind of performance mentor and gives suggestions on the direction of the music itself, often being quite absent in terms of time spent in the studio. Slipknot were famously underwhelmed with that approach (Vol. 3).

Fidelman has got better since those days.

Alter Bridge is a band that has done some latterly great albums ruined by brickwalling, their last two are terrible for it.

Definitely go if this tour comes your way - they were pretty banging last night. Support from Wormrot was good too, although spoiled a little by muddy sound.

Joe Payne has died this weekend too. Guy was 35 - he basically finished high school and got the gig playing bass with Nile. Saw him with them in 2005 and he was an animal on the instrument.

    Sheesh.

It’s gone pretty unheralded considering it’s essentially the foundation of an entire genre and global subcultural

Been listening to the new Ihsahn EP.

It's okay, 3 tracks of fairly icy black metal and 2 cheesy covers. It's well made as ever but I'm still just not sure if the saxamophone really works in this context for me.

Oh my lord. I was just reading how about ten years ago there was a joint megadeth /slayer tour and their sets were playing the whole of rust in peace and seasons in the abyss. If only I had a time machine! That's metal nirvana for me right there.

Anyone going to arctangent this year? Booked my tickets last week, and they just announced a slew of new bands to play. Bellwitch, Chelsea Wolfe, intronaut, wheel amongst a whole lot of others. I been really wanting to see Bellwitch and Chelsea Wolfe for some time. So super happy.

Really strong line up this year.
