I love the music anyway, but the theatrics are also quite amazing.

Yeah it's a good enough album, but it and Self Destruct are safe by Metallica's standards.
Have they done anything that isn’t safe since the 80’s?

The answer is Lulu isn’t it?

I haven't actually seen them live since the Black Album tour, (which was amazing), but speaking to those who have since seen them it's generally accepted that Metallica are still one of those bands you absolutely have to see perform live.

I've not seen them live since the And Justice tour, but that was a cracking concert.

listened to Electric Wizard - Dopethrone again.

I do think it's *still* the pinnacle of Doom. like, every band before aiming for this sound wanted to achieve this, every band after wanted to repeat it.

I mean, fuck, I listen more recent Doom bands like Bongripper or Monolord or Conan and I love them, but it feels like they're all chasing after this peak. Even Electric Wizards later stuff is a bit dull.

Basically Dopthrone isn't just Electric Wizard's peak, it's the peak of Doom metal in general. Why even bother trying to do more???

I'm stretching the term metal here, but I'm listening to WASP's Crimson Idol (which I've considered a fun, if significantly weaker version of the Wall). However listening to it on Prime, it's very different from the CD I haver - for example why the hell is there a 20 minute monologue explaining the plot - it's hardly complicated!

I've not heard it but I think they did a re-recording a while ago along with a dvd film or something.

I think Crimson Idol was the first CD album I ever bought. Prefer Headless Children though, it's great.

Have you seen the video for Golgotha? They've (he's?) gone full-on Christian with zero subtlety (which I guess fits)...

Is he still Christian, or did he come out the other side? Watched the Chris Holmes docu the other day, and (according to him), Blackie’s not been too Christian in his treatment of the Mean Motherfuckin Man.

Interesting doc, but I wish he’d stop trying to sing.

Any thoughts on the new Gojira now it's been out for a few weeks? I like it, mostly fairly conventional song structures but groovy and a fair bit heavier than Magma. They'll be good live/festival songs for sure.

@MacReadysChessWizard I have no idea, but from what I've heard in interviews with Chris, it sounds like he got screwed over on the publishing side meaning he won't get (or hasn't received) any song writing royalties. I get the impression he wasn't particularly business minded and perhaps trusted BL too much. If it's true, then I guess his Christian beliefs don't extend too much into the past.

Is the MM documentary worth watching?

Speaking of absent guitarists, KK Downing's new band, the creatively titled "KK's Priest" has released a new song. It's OK I guess but doesn't really do anything special to my ears. I really don't like the repetitive chorus. Man, I'm getting old and grumpy. Shouldn't I be getting excited by this?

@StixxUK I like it a lot- Magma was the first Gojira album I really got into and Fortitude feels fairly similar- not necessarily a bad thing. I'd really like to see them live (I'd really like to see anyone live at this stage but given the choice Gojira would be high on the list).

@Chug666 They're definitely one of the best live acts going, their show at Brixton was epic although lost a bit of atmosphere when a rogue beer destroyed the lighting board (which has happened at the last two gigs I went to at Brixton, the other being Machine Head's Burn My Eyes tour).

They're also an incredible Festival band, perfect mix of heavy and just massive-sounding, and not too old yet to bring the energy!

    @Beetroot_Bertie

Yes, it's definitely worth watching in that "fucking hell, please stop grinding away at this shit; you're just too old/fat/fucked in the nut" type way.

Bizarrely, he has a French wife, but he refuses to speak a word of it. The footage of them touring tiny little dives in Europe is kinda heartbreaking.

    I fucking loved WASP :(

Have to say this thread has been amazing at recommending new bands that I'm immediately into. Enforced was a great shout, really enjoyed listening to the album.

Shamelessly plugging my own metal band / project / thing if anyone fancies a listen as we plopped a new album out last week. I had it in the musicians thread but, as it's metal, I wondered if anyone in here might think it's not total rubbish:

@wuntyate Nice one, gave it a listen. Actually you may be interested to know this appeared on my Spotify release radar (before I clicked the link)!

Good stuff, is it all you or do you have a band/collaborators?

@StixxUK Did it? I did try and submit it through their spotify for artists thing and get it on a playlist but don't think it worked. Nice to know it showed up somewhere though!!

Basically I've been in metal and rock bands for years. I was in a metal band not too dissimilar from this a few years back and when we split, me and my mate just started learning studio recording ourselves. So at the moment this is just a studio project (he does guitars / drums and I do vocals / bass) that we've been doing since early 2019.

I've been umming and ahhing over in the musicians thread about doing live again but still not sure. Getting a band together where I am to do this type of thing is always a bit of a mission, but I wouldn't like to ever rule it out.

We have a punk one too, which we released an album for at the same time, same setup:

Was recently introduced to The End of Melancholy. A bizarre Conan the Barbarian vibe going on in the video, but the tune is sound.

yes totally missed all the drama, I haven't listened to them in ages, just spotted it on a mates fb page who'd shared the statement from the band.

It did sound like something had gone on. He was a naughty boy then?

@Vortex808 He was basically having an online relationship with a 19 year old girl. The girl has said she initiated it, and it was all consensual. She sent videos of Dave pulling the rod off himself and it got leaked (I've unfortunately seen it).

He wanked himself off on a private stream and I don't think her age has been confirmed though. Not sure why a young woman would want to see an old guy wank off though.

The thing that's bugging me about the whole thing is how many of the metal community are saying how he didn't do anything wrong because she was of age, and it was consensual.
But you just know for a fact if the exact same thing was done by Simon Cowell or some 57 year old pop star, they'd be calling him a disgusting old bastard.

It's amazing how hard it is for some people to be objective about the actions of someone who helped write a few songs you like.
