Seen them a few times and always a great show. Them and Accept are my favourite live bands of the past few years.

They played Wembley arena last time they played the UK as a one off. It was on a Saturday. On the Thursday before, I heard there were still standing tickets and checked to see there were, out of morbid curiosity. The next day they announced it had sold out, which is very suspect.

I think they're getting pushed as something bigger than they are in the UK.

Been listening to a lot of Paradise Lost across their discography. I've always liked the band, but to be honest they're very hit and miss. Of those tunes that hit, however, they're marvellous.

@PickledShogun totally agree although The Plague Within is pretty killer start to finish. Each album has one or two proper classics.

    @StixxUK

I don't think PL have many particularly bad songs, but as you highlight they generally only tend to have a couple of absolute belters per album. The rest tend to be mostly average only lifted further by Gregor's [often] excellent guitar licks.

    Have we done Iotunn yet?

Epic prog-sci-fi metal with lots of massive but not cheesy clean singing (alongside the growls). Really liking what I've heard so far, a lot more catchy and accessible than your Cryptic Shifts and Paranorms (so don't go in there expecting more of either of those styles).

That Go Ahead And Die record I mentioned on the last page has really got its hooks in me. Its not super original but its such an addictive mash-up of 80s thrash, hardcore and death metal.

Have to agree about Paradise Lost - I've listened to them for years, but it does tend to be the standout songs that linger. I did enjoy their almost circular evolution over the years.

New Obscura from the (mostly) old lineup. Musically sounds as frantic as ever but I dunno how to feel about the vocals this time.

Been listening to that new Darkthrone album a lot and it really has grown on me. I really liked the riffs and transitions. It's not the most technical or challenging or exciting thing out there, but I don't think there's a duff moment on the album.

The last half of this track actually is sublime though. I'm a sucker for analogue synth over scuzzy guitar. Almost gives me Urfaust vibes.

Been listening to Megadeth, Rust in Peace. Always liked the band, but mainly listen to this album because I'm teaching myself to play Holy Wars.

Been letting Alexa pick the tunes on my drive. She did good, lots of bands I've not heard for years. Machine Head, Tiamat, Life of Agony etc.

Given the album a couple of plays and it hasn't quite grabbed me. Will give it some more as on paper, it's everything I like.

I love me a bit of Darkthrone. Something about their scuzzy riffage that just works for me.

Anyway here's some riffy death metal from Inhuman Condition. They tickle the pre-Human era Death itch.

New Mayhem EP came out a few days ago. Not that remarkable actually if it weren't for showing their true colours by covering Dead Kennedys, Ramones and Discharge.

So how many of you lot are going to Bloodstock? Seems at this stage it's a safe bet to be going ahead. I've quite a few friends going (and a few who are playing at it too). If it wasn't for some other financial commitments, I'd be doing everything I could to get there.

I'm going, massively looking forward to it.

Bit worried about whether the headliners will end up happening - Devin Townsend and Kreator...

I think they're currently the only non-UK bands on the bill.

@RobTheRobber quite surprised by this, I thought Mayhem were shall we say, not at that end of the political spectrum.

@StixxUK Did you see he announced a Manchester gig a day before Bloodstock? That would imply he's confident he can get over. But yeah, I share your scepticism.

I think it's difficult to align Mayhem with any politics, they always struck me as nihilist, and nazi skin bands were also influenced by punk. So I don't think you can really draw any conclusions from that.

But in terms of influence, I always thought of early Mayhem as heavily influenced by hardcore punk:

edit: that said, covering those bands does feel like a middle finger to everyone who thinks of Mayhem as a nazi band.

I’m still impressed that there is a CBeebies show fully soundtracked by Townsend. Really adds a grand psychedelic edge to seeing what things can be a different colour.

At the Gates latest album 'The Nightmare of Being'

Only listened to the first 4 tracks, but so far it's very good.

New Maiden track out. I might be being very harsh, but after an interesting start, it sounds like a Book of Souls B side. Maybe my expectations are just too high. :(

The intro reminds me of when Bon Jovi added a western twang to his sound.

The vocals sit really weirdly in the mix too but that might just be my work laptop’s speakers

I kinda like that it's not typical Maiden sounding (or at least a little bit different from their norm) and the video is cool. At least it doesn't have the reduntant plinky plonky bookends that they seem to enjoy sticking on tracks these days. Dare I say it sounds like it might suit Blaze Bayley's voice better?
