Didn't seem to be any thread about to talk about this, so thought I'd make one.

So can anyone beat the All Blacks? Think France might have a chance, and South Africa look very strong.

Main thing catching my attention at the moment is how awful Wales's shirts are...skintight shirts on fat Welsh props isn't a pretty sight!

Hopefully this thread will actually have some life. As born and bred South African I rate the chances of the Springboks as very very low. Reason being the fact that should they make the final I am sure a politician back in SA will get involved.

The Australians probably will make the final again knowing their luck. They are like the Germans at the Football World Cup.

Currently the Irish are feeling perky but their warm up games have been dire/dreadful/ghastly etc. No momentum going into the World Cup and they will meet the All Blacks in the Quarter Finals.

Argentina for the dark horse bet!

I'm Welsh. I will occasionally look at this thread, when I can see it through the tears.

Join the club! Of course, our English neighbours only get interested in rugby when they are actually winning and a guy called Jonny is kicking goals. Try for Wales as I type!!

edit: although I'm not sure it actually was a try...

Like Ronan O'Garas against Italy on Friday! Still not convinced that was a try.

Still the English have zero chance of holding onto the cup. So no parade this time round.

That's one thing I'm really glad of. I've had quite enough of the BRITISH media telling me that WE won the World Cup.

It still amazes me how consistently NZ bring through world class rugby players considering how small the talent pool is. The NZ government stats website says the population is estimated at just over 4.2m!

Their national cricket team is usually pretty useful too.

I'll be cheering for the Springboks, but I think that France who are currently at 10-1 to win is definitely worth a flutter.

Still can't see past NZ though, but anything can happen come match day.

England should probably start aiming for 2011

Congratulations on Portugal reaching the World Cup! Sorry to hear that you are in the same group as the All Blacks. Let us just hope that it isn't like the 1995 World Cup vs Japan.

That was indeed a brutal game. But the Japanese never gave up! Doesn't he still hold the record for the greatest points total in a single game at the World Cup?

You know that you're not helping right?!

And we lost today with Japan (if I'm not mistaken) by 15 to 13 in a friendly match...

/Baby Jesus doesn't cry because he supports the All Blacks...

That's because usually half of their team is pillaged from the South Sea Islands....poor old Tonga, Fiji and Samoa :(

Well maybe half was an exaggeration, but they do have a history of naturalising Pacific Island players.

Just looking at the current World Cup squad, obviously some of these guys have lived in NZ since youth, but players born in either Fiji, Tonga & Samoa are Joe Rokocoko, Mils Muliaina, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Rodney So'oialo, Isaia Toeava, Sione Lauaki, Chris Masoe, and Jerry Collins.

9 out of 30 is quite a high ratio really. I don't think you can really say that NZ produces its all its players out of solely its population, that's all.

I had a bad weekend with the counting really!

The IRB are running a World Cup Fantasy League on their website. The engine is based on the FA Premier League one as far as I can tell, but only have to pick 15 players.

    http://en.fantasy.rugbyworldcup.com/

We could set up an EG league if enough people are interested? You can also do a random pick if your rugby knowledge isn't that great. Not sure if it's worth another thread to attract people's interest, but if anyone thinks it's worth it, post ahead.

I might have a look at that later. For some reason I still think England are a good bet at 33/1, not because I actually think they will win it, but just from a value point of view.

I really hope England can pull of the most unlikely of shocks, just to upset the Welsh! ;)

Hard to see past NZ, but I fancy SA.

Talking of the moaners next door, why are Wales and Scotland being allowed to play games at home, with the obvious advantage that carries for them?
