We did give away too many penalties, but it didn't help that we didn't get the ones awarded to us that we should have done (one knock on not spotted and two offsides where the player was crossing over was not given, I didn't see the ref 'miss' one on our side) and that try should definitely have stood.

No point crying over spilt milk, but I would much rather we had lost this fair and square, rather than feeling that it was somewhat taken out of our hands. I'm not crying corruption, more incompetency, which is unusual with Rugby officials I think.
The referee was far from outstanding, but it was clearly a toe in touch. Looks like we're going to have to spend the next four fucking years listening to Englishman whining about how that was a 'try', in spite of the video evidence.
I'm not going to bite, despite you obviously wanting that kind of response with your (stereotypical borderline racist) remark.

But quite how you can say 'clearly' that his toe was in touch is beyond me. Not one angle showed anything clearly, if anything it looked like his foot might have been up, and there were many other decisions other than that one.

You've not looked at the image I linked to above then? Nor the TV?

    Baffling.

No I have, and nothing is 'clear' at all. In your mind perhaps, in my mind and it would appear quite a few thousand others (many of which were neutrals) in the crowd it wasn't.

But there's obviously no being reasonable with you, you're just out for a reaction. Troll away.

They would be fucking right though. Most footballers are right chavy little cunts. Can you imagine how cringe-able it would be to be a fly on the wall in the England football training camp? With pikey Rooney, racist Terry , thick as pig shit Ferdinand et al.

It would be an embarrassment. Most of them find it difficult to string a fucking sentence together. I'm from a footballing family, Grandad was a pro, Dad a semi pro, but I'll be the first to admit that 90% of footballers are chavy little fuckwads.

Gary Liniker, Michael Owen, Theo Walcott - all OK, but the rest?
I disagree with most of what you've just said. Because for every Ashley Cole, there's a David Weir, Matthew Upson, Gavin McCann, Kevin Doyle and more besides that seem decent guys. Just because we live in this Sun-led tabloid culture that preys on 'celebs' and 'gossip', doesn't make the mongs they spotlight representative of the entire footballing world.

That's what's so great about football. It's the ordinary man's game, and if you're going to slag off 90% of pro's then you may as well slag off the entire 90% of the country because your mate Dave down the pub who's dead sound could just have easily been a footballer, if only he had had the talent.

I suppose you could call me middle class given my relatively decent socio-economic position, academic achievements and profession but I can't stand elitist, toffish snobs, and I despise the Daily Mail for their often supremist views.

Chief among them is the view that footballers are scum. Yes there are twats amongst the players, management and fans but that's what happens when you're the people's game. You get all types because you encompass society as a whole.

Unlike rugby which pretty much only plays to one subset of society, except for times like these when the majority hop on the bandwagon for a few short weeks before the dust settles and they stop caring and go back to the footie, which is their mainstay.

Don't get me wrong I'm not anti middle class or a working class champion or anything like that. I just like unassuming, down to earth people, whether they're a high-flying banker or a humble brickie.

Just so long as you don't take yourself too seriously, aren't overly judgemental and are good company, you're alright by me! Anyway, I just think you might want to rethink your 90% jibe, even if it was said in jest.

Who was your Grandad btw, if you don't mind me asking? Anyone we'd know?

Not being funny, but if the toe of that boot is touching the line in the pic you linked, then that's a boot worthy of a Vic & Bob sketch.

I don't think many Birmingham fans would have a nice word to say about Mr Upson.

I'd hardly call posting a picture of Cueto's toe in touch with the ball not grounded 'trolling'. Seems fairly "reasonable".

Enjoy puching the inside of your bubble x

It wasn't the posting of the pic, it was the deliberate post afterwards to try to get a reaction from any English supporter that will visit this thread tonight, of which there will be many.

Also the fact that you seem to think that a blurry static image is 'clear' when many times during this World Cup I've thought it was a clear 'Try' only for another angle to show that it wasn't quite over the line.

For instance, that 'clear' toe could actually be shadow (which is exactly what it looks like to me) as deem pointed out, the guy must have been wearing clown boots otherwise.

Ah yeah well people can have twatish personalities and I'm sure some of the rugby heads do. I was more referring to what deem said about being in the England camp, and that not every footballer is a gormless fool like the likes of Ferdinand, Rooney, etc.

Anyway I should probably stop derailing the thread at this point. Hard luck England, fair play South Africa. And +1 to Fruit_Salad on his comment about the unifying powers of sport.
  • Deleted user 20 October 2007 22:09:13
South Africa definitely deserved it and I thought they were quite sporting. Shame it was concluded the way it was, but they thoroughly deserved it, not just tonight but all the way throughout the tournament.

    Are you bundy in disguise?

    ;P

Anyway, I was kind of joking - obviously - but there IS an element of truth in it. I'd quite happily stand by my statement that it would be fucking embarrassing to see what goes on in the England football training camp - where as I don't think I would be in the Rugby camp.

Sadly, there isn't much of a trace of my Grandad, bar a few books my dad has. He played for Chelsea, Fulham, Watford & Huddersfield between 1940 & 1960.

I have all his contracts, but that's about all I have.

Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely proud of my poor, working class football background.

Fair enough point KM - it was a close call and one I would have been screaming at the TV about had it been Wales having that ruled out.

At the end of the day I don't mean to antagonise the English as losing in a final is a damn sight closer than we've come in recent years!

But it will be nice for the hysteria to die down a little...

Oh when I was referring to the Daily Mail and how much I hate it and its snobbishness none of that was meant about you if that's how it came across!

Sorry to hear about your Grandad anyways but interesting all the same. Not a bad life being a professional sportsmen I would have though, in any era!

I wonder how many people have become committed Rugby followers this past fortnight, and won't watch it again for years!

Seeing Gordon Brown there attempting to look like he cared was horrible.

    They should have interviewed him:

"It is a shame that England lost, but they just didn't work hard enough out there. What they need is more Polish or Eastern European people in the team, they work much harder than English people".

Now that clearly WAS a penalty. Unless your Jamie Redtwat that is.

    Not particularly Dragul.

SA had a game plan which, while it was very boring, worked superbly. It didn't make for an overly entertaining game, but they were awesome and that's all that matters really.

I've never seen a team dominate lineouts so much, truly great performance and played to their strengths perfectly.

Any worthy "touchdown" (I don't know the correct name in English)?

I'll try to catch an most important moments of the match...
