From Engadget:Well the rumours have been floating around for a few days, and now we've gotten official word -- in the form of the invite you see above -- that Apple will be holding a "special event" on September 5th. So what do you folks hope will be revealed regarding the iPod range come the 5th September? I reckon we will see something along the lines of a group (4GB, 8GB, 30GB and 80GB) of a single iPod design (similar to the iPhone?). I certainly expect some form of touch-screen as the coverflow feature on the iPhone is genius. "The beat goes on." |

Registered 20 years agoIt'd be nice to see some new stuff being announced, as my first-gen Nano is starting to look a bit scratched and worn. The battery life isn't what it used to be either...
A built-in radio has been top of my wish list for ages though, so I hope they sort that one. -

Registered 20 years agoThe thing I really wish Apple would do is a set up that works like Sonos but which you just plug your iPod into when you're home.
Assuming the price was right, I'd definitely buy it... -

Registered 18 years agoThe battery on my my 2nd gen mini is going b0rkb0rk, so a new iPod should probably lower the prices on the nano. Goodness. -
If it's a phone-less iPhone, so an iPod with WIFI and OSX and multi-touch, for current iPod prices, then I'm definitely getting one.
Otherwise I won't.

Goes without saying. An iPod which can't store your entire music collection has no point. -

Registered 15 years agoI've been waiting for a "proper" video iPod for ages. So I hope they do decide to announce a new design. It's about time I replaced my 1st gen 1GB Shuffle.
Hopefully they've also focussed on the sound quality as well, and not just on the design and functionality. -

Registered 18 years agoI just pray it isn't like the probably fako mockups that were doing the rounds last week.
I'm still not convinced we'll see a phoneless iPhone though, as it'd surely dilute the demand/gadget lust surrounding the iPhone. -
On the one hand it's surely inevitable that the iPod is going to go down the iPhone route. The thing is built for multi-touch.
On the other hand, like you say, that would cannibalise sales. It seems unlikely that they'd launch a multi-touch iPod in non-US markets *before* they've even got the iPhone. The rumour mill seems to think that it'll be a normal touch-wheel iPod but with mobile OSX and coverflow. If the latter then consider me unimpressed. -

Registered 18 years agoYeah, I think Apple are in a tricky position really - dilute iPhone demand or release a fairly dull 5.5.1g iPod that won't set any pulses racing. Could be completely wrong on both counts of course. -

Well, no point to me. .gif)
Honestly I can't be bothered sorting through my music collection to decide what to put on my iPod today. Then I might as well just make mixtapes for my Walkman. ;p -

Registered 15 years agoMy old shuffle was great, and the 1gb 1st gen Nano I got a while back is awesome, the small size means it goes everywhere with me. It certainly wouldn't be a bad thing if it held 20gb but 1gb will do for now. -
If the new iPods resemble the iPhone but without the phone (ie, full screen, touch screen, cover flow, etc), but with a decent capacity, I'll eat my hat.
And then sell my brand new 80GB iPod and buy a new one.

I just don't think they're ready to make that leap and cannibalise iPhone sales like that so soon. My money's on almost exactly the same form factor, even thinner yet again, with a physical click wheel, some new OS so that it can do the cover flow thing and maybe a few other graphical niceties, Beatles on the iTunes Store, and that's it. -

Registered 16 years agoApple, I hope this is what I will see on the 5th September or at least something similar to the design:

I had my usual 'Apple sex-wee' when I viewed the rather delightful mock-up. -

Registered 17 years agoI'm still using my ipod mini. I don't care about video playback, but if they added a DAB and extended the battery life it might tempt me to upgrade. -
Yeah that's a lovely looking mock-up. However, with no click wheel visible one assumes that would mean touch screen selection, making the screen-space inhibiting buttons at the bottom a bit redundant, and you would have to tilt on the side to get widescreen video, which would make the buttons the wrong orientation.
I'm going with either an iPhone-like design including touchscreen interface, or sticking with the current interface system and no touch-screen, and just jazzing the graphics and OS up. -
I....don't know what to expect. Are we sure its iPod related? -

Registered 16 years agoOne more day to go everybody and the rumours are starting to piece together as the much anticipated event looms upon us.
Taken from Apple Insider:
Citing sources at Taiwan-based contract manufacturers, the Far Eastern rumour publication reports that the "new iPod video will also come with a wide-screen panel, high storage capacity and Wi-Fi connectivity."
Instead of using traditional hard disk drives (HDD), DigiTimes reports inline with earlier AppleInsider reports that the new iPod will instead employ NAND flash-based storage.
It seems that the possibility of a touch screen iPod is more or less confirmed, hopefully!
"The beat goes on." -
I'll be preparing an eBay auction for my (absolutely pristene) 80GB iPod today, then waiting till I see what's announced tomorrow. If it's TEH S3X and has good specs (as opposed to being another example of crippling the specs in favur of the design) then it's a buy for me and an eBay for the old 'un.
Apparently the line up is going to be something like this:
- new iPod nano (fatter, with video screen and coverflow)
- new touchscreen iPod (full screen? hopefully)
- new iPhone nano
Apparently Target issued a memo stating that an all-new, high-profile and high-theft device will be delivered from the 6th of September. The sources claim the wording implies that it's something new as well as the new iPods... hence, iPhone nano?

Registered 20 years agoI'd much prefer flash to HDD, but I thought 30GB flash drives were still pretty pricey (versus the cost of a HDD)? If they keep the prices the same I might be sold, but a price hike would put me off a bit.
Touch screen would be nice, though I'm not really bothered about video, so I wonder if the widescreen thing would be a bit pointless... -

I also dn't have anywhere near 80GB of music - more like 25GB at most.
Therefore I'd be happy with a 40 or 60GB new iPod at the same price as the 80GB current model. Possibly. Maybe.
Let's be honest, it's just the geek in me that wants shiny new Apple things. -

Apparently a touch screen iPod is all but confirmed by all sorts of industry sources from Taiwan and California. Everyone seems to think it's definitely going to happen, but until this week I was with you on this. However, with so many new touchscreen devices now on the way since iPhone made the world aware of how desirable touchscreen was, I think Apple would be silly to sit on it for much longer.
I still think it's too early for a touch screen iPod. The iPhone is still only out in the US.
However, there's always the chance that these sources are getting confused with new components being ordered for an iPhone nano? -
