I've already got a German Shepherd and am thinking of getting a second dog as a buddy for Sheba. Any useful suggestions?

Why is your dog named after cat food?

    The shame! :)
  • Deleted user 21 September 2007 23:36:18
I'm allergic to cats so that's a no-no. I'm thinking of getting a Chihuahua for a laugh. The GF wants the 2nd dog really, but she's shit at all the walking and exercise that comes with having a dog so I'm reluctant to give myself double the work, so a Chihuahua would solve that problem.

However, I'd worry that one day I'd come home to find the big dog has suffocated the little dog.

    :D

    I didn't choose the name, she's a rescue dog.

How about a rescue greyhound? They make great family pets, don't need as much exercise as you think, plus you'll be rehoming one of the most abandoned breeds in the UK (due to all the racing).

I got my boy, Bob, about 7 years ago. One of the best things I've ever done.

Actually you're not the first person to recommend Greyhounds. A guy I regularly bump into on the moor and his family look after 17 of them as they were abandoned and he said I can have one of his. He also said they only need one 20 minute walk a day as they use up so much energy in that time that they're fucked for the rest of the day.

You'll most likely be looking for a good match for the Alsatian so i'd recommend a smarty like an otterhound("it has great strength and dignity, with a strong body and long striding action") or a anatolian shepherd dog("They become very protective of other animals in the household, and will treat them as their "flock." They have also been known to kill bears to protect their charges.") ;)

Alsatians + Labradors or Alsatians + Golden Retriever make good chums n'all, i grew up in a Alsatian + Golden Retriever/Lab cross pack. Bitches the two of them ;)

Not getting a puppy are you?

A second dog isn't really twice the amount of work, you know. Unless you plan on keeping and walking them separately for some time.

There is only one real type of dog in the world and that is a sighthound. The rest are just wanne be dogs.

Get a Whippet or a Greyhound and never look back.
