I need a cheapskate laptop, any advice much appreciated. I don't want to be too precious about it because it'll be to chuck in a bag when I'm away or to take camping etc. Probably get a TV tuner if possible for some CBeebies action too. That said, any chance, along with a fine selection of pubes and the chance at a bonus STD, that if I bought second hand on eBay I could squeeze some gaming out of it on a budget of about £350? For a bit of indie gaming and maybe some AAA of a couple of years ago I've no idea what specs to look for. Limiting factor being the GPU mainly? Am I best off still avoiding anything integrated and trying to get some sort of mobile nVidia card, and if so, what sort of spec? CPU of 2.5Ghz dual core cut it or do I need quad core for a bit of future proofing? |

I'm looking for similar. Bought a hp stream 11 for the kids which is cheap and cheerful but no good for gaming.
I'm currently watching this http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-ab271sa-15-6-laptop-blue-10137888-pdt.html which should go clearance soon. That said, it was at £329 last week. -
Oh and i did quite fancy this http://m.costco.co.uk/view/p/hp-pavilion-15-an001na-156-inch-star-wars-special-edition-notebook-200514 but my wife didn't and it's supposed to be for her, so...
Out of your price range though. -

Registered 9 years agoAn i3/i5 4000 series CPU in a laptop (with an Intel 4000 series iGPU) can do PS3/360 era games at a bit of a push (UE3 games work especially well), and they're quite cheap now. -
I need another laptop. Nothing fancy and I won't be gaming on it. Its mainly as a work substitute so remote desktop and vpn, I also want to be able to mess with my raspberry pi and 3ds homebrew.
Quite tempted by this I spotted on hotukdeals. Should do the job.gif)

Registered 15 years agoSo I bought a Windows 8.1 laptop as a family browsing/indie gaming/ceebeebies workhorse.
The last time I had a Windows machine, XP was the shit.
I haven't a clue where to start setting it up but I want to run it clean and lean, minimum extra shit requiring minimum extra maintenance.
I presume I need to load the fucker up and then spend time uninstalling all the Lenovo bloatware first?
Then set up user accounts
Then turn off Cortana
Then install Firefox
Then install ublock?
Any extra malware/spyware stuff these days or is Windows Defender good enough given, as a family machine, I'm unlikely to use it in my chronic pr0n/masturbation arsenal. -

Registered 15 years agoHoly SHITBALLS, Windows 8 is a mess. It's like the supposed multi-department backstabbing at Microsoft made literal in operating system form. Everyone had to add their bit in, huh?
I can't take it, going to try this one weird trick to see if I can still get Windows 10 for free... -

Registered 17 years agoJust bought myself an Acer chromebook.
Was looking at laptops for other folk and saw this rather tasty Acer 14
Found it on Ebuyer for £250 and couldn't resist.
I don't even know what the limitations of Chrome OS are. Ah well! -

Phoned PC world (I know I know but they're the only stockist it seems) to see where they had stock and none of their central London stores had any

Registered 17 years agoWell, it does seem good and nippy, great build quality but it's a crying shame they haven't quite got android apps working on that one yet.
It's on the list but no timeframe other than 2016/2017 which is a shame.
Tidy bit of kit for £280 tho. Metal as fuck. -
Morning chaps.
Realistically how long should a laptop battery be lasting when doing brief web browsing and using programmes such as word, excel and email.
Are the batteries replaceable? Not really used the one my better half has (samung model) around six years old. The charge just seems to drain within 15 mins which I know isn't right.
Any recommended sites to buy a replacement if possible. -

@Dirtbox that's probably what has happened. I'll have a look on the Samsung website to find out the cost. Probably easier to buy another laptop although I only really want it to do a CV and apply for a couple of jobs probably cheaper to nip to the library.
Cheers for the info. -
@CompetitiveDad
Couldn't you just do that while it's plugged in?...
You can get batteries all over the place (Amazon for starters), but it's best to stick to originals instead of third party ones. -

Registered 11 years agoIs there such a thing as a really light and super cheap IPS 16:10 laptop that will primarily be used for steam streaming? It currently works great with a Bootcamped 2009 Macbook, but it weighs an absolute ton. -

How about that one? It's not super light but 2kg for 15.6" isn't bad. -

Registered 16 years agoOh I see. Do they even make laptops at those resolutions anymore? -
@dfunked yeah it's sort off what we do already I guess but its become a bit redundant since owning a tablet so the constant barrage of updates from widows every time it's gets turned on (which is rare) plus having to connect it to a power source makes the whole thing a bit of a chore to use.
You're right though, why spend money on something we barely use!
Other than the battery issue the memory (3gb) is being hogged by something and it's running at a snail's pace, had a Google and apparently it could be an issue with windows 7 so managed to get a free upgrade to windows 10.
Other than family photos and videos of kids etc the laptop has barely been used for anything so I'm not sure why it's been so shite. Think it's around 6 year old but like I said it's barely been used due to the above issues.

Registered 17 years agoI need help people. I need a new laptop as my XPS 12 spinny flippy thing has gone to shit (it went to shit a long time ago but was waiting forever for a new MBP to be announced). Work is paying so price isn't a massive consideration but can't be doing a fully specced 15" MBP or anything stupid.
Just to make it harder, everyone in the world has just announced a new range, so I'm torn and would like opinions. I've narrowed it down to the following:
MBP. I want a small thing for using on my lap, so would be the 13" with touch bar. Bar looks like it might be neat for some things. The 13" doesn't have an option for dedicated graphics (I won't really be gaming on it, but will the onboard be ok for running the 3D match engine on FM?). I have a PC at home and at work, and sometimes it would be useful to have access to a Mac for work, but not critical. It will have an amazing trackpad, but I will need a bagful of adapters.
Surface Book. Looks fancy and fast. Touch and tablet might be useful. The massive hinge gap looks a bit unsightly, and a bit put off by lots of internet reports of unreliability. Absurd battery life.
XPS 13. Seems to be the best reviewed laptop on the market. Up to date with Kaby Lake. Slightly put off by the experience of my current Dell laptop which has proved highly unreliable.
Razer Blade Stealth. The new model supposedly has the best PC trackpad on the market, and all the obnoxious lights on it to show off that you're a 16 year old DotA player can now be disabled so it's a bit more respectable. Also Kaby Lake. 6 hour battery life is a big off putter.
So what do I do? This is far harder than it should be. -
Bump for the morning crowd.
