Plus it was even Shinji (being the Sony corporate sell-out or whatever) who reviewed it. I was hoping for an epoch-making 5/10, but the guy disappointed me.
if the text in the review doesn't allay all fears that the reviewer was somehow influenced by hype then I don't know what will.

But we all know that the text is irrelevant, it's all about the score baby!
EG saw the wood through the trees and marked it an 8. The same publication then gives Halo 3 a 10/10 and if the text in the review doesn't allay all fears that the reviewer was somehow influenced by hype then I don't know what will.

After playing Gears LOTS, especially online, I would agree with the 8/10 score. It's fun, it's pretty, but there's flaws a plenty. -

I'm not saying he's 100% right. I'm saying he's got a point.
Not in the typically nasty way in which he worded it.
...and maybe, just maybe, all the other reviewers enjoyed it just as much as he did?
Well, of course. I generally think that behemoths that get infinitely pushed by platform holders tend to get overscored a little though. Of course that doesn't mean there can't be a game that fully deserves the scores. -

But this is the thing - why do people seem to need that to be the case so badly? Would it have made the slightest bit of difference to your own enjoyment of Halo 3 if EG had given it 2/10? -

It doesn't make a difference to enjoyment but, and I know this is silly, it does lose you credibility in any debate over a game after that if it was give say, universal 5s.
This isn't true of any old game but for a game you love and want to defend a bad score gives you less ground to stand on. -

It doesn't give you any less ground to stand on in arguing that *you* enjoyed the game though. That's the core of the whole thing - people's continuing need for the approval and affirmation of their peers. It's not enough to enjoy something yourself, you have to convince everyone else you're right too. It's just odd. -
Its not odd its human nature.
A communal thing innit, you don't want to be seen as the odd one out or wrong for liking something.
Also in halos case it sort of justifies why people liked the games in the first place, its not nice being accused of being ignorant or silly for liking halo with comments like "never played a pc shooter" and so on. -
Heh, but do you really think comments like that are going to stop just because it got a 10 on EG and in Edge? -

Smelly wrote in the MP3 comments:
Comparing Halo (a bog standard dull average shooter where you walk down corridors pointing your cursor at stuff and pressing the trigger button) against metroid prime (an action adventure with 3rd person puzzles, 1st person shooting, etc etc) is like comparing a bog standard dog shit found on every street corner to a gleaming one of a kind chalice in an antique store. -
