Uwe is the best classic heavy euro, euro style designer working today, imo. Vital is a bit more modern and the king of super heavy games.

Super heavy in more ways than one! I remember trying to carry On Mars, Escape Plan and The Gallerist out to the car in one go when I picked them up. Didnít need to go to the gym that day for sure.

@rice_sandwich I get this, but weíve all got to start somewhere. My ďinĒ is with things I recognise (loud, brash franchise based fare) to begin with. I am looking a little broader but those other kind of games come alive from playing or being able to compare x against y and are harder for a housebound noob to get a grasp at. I am listening to opinions and endorsements in here, despite my regular shit posts in here ☺️

Iím just getting my suppressed teen on at the moment and by god itís helping lift the mood and give me something to focus on. Iím just glad itís come at a time where I can throw some time (and a small amount of cash at). Iím also trying to keep the missus onside and involved and so far so good there too.
Where I am in 6 months or a year who knows but my early experiences are that this is something I can get behind and maybe bring some friends along when we can all spend time with others.

Anyway, back to setting my curtains for maximum twitch for the morning.

Having a theme you can properly get into is pretty key imo. I can appreciate good design and mechanisms etc, but if the theme doesn't grab me it's going to leave me fairly cold no matter what.

There are obviously exceptions to that, but a poorly or boringly themed game needs to be pretty special to pull me in.

Exactly, sci-fi or fantasy themed boardgames are a snoozefest for me. I need my farming and medieval castle building, or the good old staple of trading goods in the Mediterranean.

This is spiralling rapidly.... Lockdown purchases of The Crew, Viticulture+expansions followed by Lord of the Rings JiME (arrives tomorrow!) - at least these were all well justified as something the missus would possibly get involved in. The wine theme in particular went down well.

But then there's the back order of Root andKickstarter purchases of Pax Pamir 2nd Ed, Oath: something something and Frosthaven. Not really sure what to expect but all the glossy pictures won me over. Honestly not really sure how to justify any of these ones!

    That's me done for 2020 & 2021 honest.

Nice, let me know how it is encountering enemies from the villain pack. Can't wait to give it another spin but we're waiting for the big expansion.

@Bleh will do boss, We wonít be diving in just yet. We are planning on trying hers first (Disneyís villainous) which also sounds intriguing.

How do you think lotr would flow best for 2 players?

Is 2 each easily manageable? I can pick up most straight forwards things, my wife less so. Iíd be doing a bit of heavy lifting, thatís why the app appeals for us both to enjoy from the same side of the table as it were.
Iím thinking maybe I do 2 and her one, or would one each be enough? It scales via team size I understand, but would just one each be balanced enough to pick roles freely.

@f00b_inc hehe, helps me remember Iím not the only one getting seriously stuck in at the moment. I have always thought Iíd like to dip a toe in, but I feel like Iíve slipped and fallen in the bath head first. 🤣🤣

Won a game of Dawn of the Zeds last night. I cheated a bit though so doesn't count. But, I realised that the game isn't too mean, because in the end I had all my important troops still alive and kicking.

Even if most cards ar mean, some are nice.

I've only played a 2 player game, each player controlling 1 character, but the balance felt quiet good. Not to easy not to difficult. We didn't managed to win every scenario but that makes the story even more interesting.

We played with an elf hunter and a dwarf guardian and it didn't felt like a wrong pick. Can't judge if all combinations work equally good. Although their is a dwarf ability which is further enhanced if it's applied to another dwarf but the base game only has one dwarf. That was a bit of a bummer. Some events are easier for a certain classes because to achieve success you need x strength or agility for example. So it's not like one character can do everything and it's fun to try and guess what you need by reading the event information.

I would definitely say it's a good gateway game. The app does most administration and it's not rules heavy so you can enjoy the adventure and focus on your character. You also have to make choices at points so you will be drawn into the adventure. Plus it starts slow and your characters grows so you can steadily grow into your character. By the end you do have some options how to build your character but it's not that it starts with overwhelming options and of you feel like you picked something wrong you can change it next mission.

I would reckon it's a good game to enjoy for the both of you.

My brother owns the game and he recently both Disney villainous as well. Haven't played it yet but heard good things about it.

I'm fully nerding out with The Hunters: Twilight of the U-Boats. Who knew that what is essentially a fairly dry book keeping exercise of continuously rolling on charts and checking results could be fun and transform into an exciting narrative adventure? I'm doing an Indian Ocean patrol and every encounter feels like things can go horribly wrong at any time. Engaging even unescorted targets is not without risk.

For those interested, there us some interesting discussion regarding Nemo's War on bgg with the developer asking for feedback for a 2.1 version.
Sounds like the adventure deck will be basically doubled and lots if new modes etc

The game has huge replay value already, this'll make it ridiculous!

Also bought Res Arcana finally, lots of research has made me quite excited about this one, I just hope the wife can get into it too as we both love Seasons 🤞🤞

And there we are, riceís vice is nazi domination 🤣🤣🤣
But thatís the thing with these things isnít it, itís hard to tell at distance sometimes exactly how a game will make you feel or involve, which is very intriguing.

My delivery arrived earlier, villainous looks rather interesting, and lotr comes in one of those slabs of a box, which Iím yet to dig into. Iím going to have to find some room for these incoming boxes.

Out of interest, how big is everyoneís collection? Iím a hoarder so Iím probably the worst kind of person to get into this as I have a hard time letting things go, just in case.

Heh, actually in this game the Germans are getting totally destroyed as it's the end of WWII.

Mother fucker... Just when I've bought it. I bet they'll bring back the rectangular box as well. I never should have pissed on that guys parade.

It's a really great game and I can't see myself "knowing the deck" to the extent where a doubled one would matter. I've yet to add the special Red Sails in the Morning tiles or buy any of the expansions.

It's interesting to compare it to Dawn of the Zeds (seeing as both are solo first games from the same publisher). Two very different games. Nemo is a good book and a cup of tea infront of the fireplace. Dawn of the Zeds is a beer, some snacks and a great action film on TV.

That said, there seems to be more depth as the "story" progress in DotZ.

I have a rule of keeping my game collection at my age limit. So I can very slowly grow the collection but it never gets out of control. I'm currently right at the cap

    Ok, it was 43.

That isn't even a particularly big collection. It's not until you have a couple of hundred you can start talking.

Wait, I think I might've missed another one.

I won't mention how many games I have :D Less than 100 though.

This stuff looks interesting for anyone looking for solo / co-op rpg action during lockdown:

Ironsworn - free rpg rules for solo and co-op play

    https://www.ironswornrpg.com/

Mythic Game Master Emulator - provides a GM system for other RPG systems ($6.95 for the downloadable rules pdf)
