Mine isn’t arriving until next week. BOOO

I’ll just continue my Hunters campaign instead. My Kapitänleutnant has the Knights Cross with Oakleaves and nearly 150,000 tonnage. But I also keep lucking out and getting the British Isles patrols that have easy pickings without much danger. Pretty certain I’m going to get depth charged up the wazoo at the next patrol.

The Hunted is kicking my butt right from the start. The Hunters sounds like a holiday camp in comparison.

It really is. Totally lulls you into a false sense of security.

“Oh boy a convoy! Time to unload everything I have!”

    Quickly becomes

    “Oh shit an escort! Nopenopenopenopenope”

I mean, it’s historically accurate but hoo boy. Just surviving the later years is difficult enough, let alone getting good tonnage.

    @Your-Mother

In the first encounter of a fresh patrol, right after an uneventful transit, I chanced an attack on a convoy, missed with all torpedoes and then the escort scored 4 hits on me. It's so brutal!

I found a video series that helped to explain some of the fuzzier aspects of the rules. I'm enjoying the game a lot.

Hehe, rolling on tables with d10s and d100s is super fun. Very entertaining narratives can emerge from simple mechanics.

    /Doths cap

    “We’re going on.........an adventure”

We are not quite set yet here but I’ve got the villain pack and added to the game, thumbed through the cards and they numerous, oh so diddy and varied. In fact all the components look fantastic, it feels a bit small but It looks like there’s a lot going on, and that’s before knowing quite how the app is going to bring the final sprinkle of magic.

Thinking 2 heroes per player may be a bit of a handful with all the deck management etc to begin with.
I’m sure it will all fit together once it’s on the table, here’s hoping I don’t lose the wife along the way.

    I’m pumped!!

Well, my first proper dive into The Hunted ended in a very quick defeat. My patrol of the British Isles got off to a good start as I sunk a large freighter and successfully evaded detection by the escort. A couple of quiet turns followed and then I thought I'd take my chances against a lone ship with an escort as I had plenty of torpedoes to spare.

Big mistake! My 3 torpedoes all misssed and I failed to escape from the escort for 9 turns in a row. I took lots of damage: the hull, hydrophones, torpedo tubes, fuel tanks, flak guns, flooding and a few crew members went down before the end. The modifiers for the damaged equipment made it just about impossible to escape the escort. It looks like once you get in trouble, you can really be in trouble.

Still, a good time was had and I'll try again another day. The 40 page rulebook wasn't anything to worry about as you only need about half of it to get a patrol up and running. I probably made some mistakes and forgot to apply modifiers at times. All in all despite the relatively long rulebook it's an easy game to get up and running.

@Tonka yes indeed. The only digital game I've enjoyed playing online so far. I mentioned it to her that I'd had a great time and was annoyed the game wasn't in print any more or I would have bought it. She went hunting on ebay. I'm impressed.

Usually she's just annoyed by any new boxes I bring into the house.

Maybe the world really has changed....

Getting deeper into Dawn of the Zeds. It definitely benefits from playing with more rules. It's also, as someone on here said a while back, a game focused on generating stories.

Nemo is more of a game game. You can plan and calculate and mitigate risks and costs. DotZ is more about acting and hoping for the best, and the tension arrives from when things go horribly wrong. That cocky young deputy who has been kicking ass all game suddenly balls it up and is crushed by a weak zombie mob.

On the other end you have the amazing villagers that all of a sudden band together and pushes back a massive horde that sprung out of nowhere, way too close to the Town Centre for your liking.

So, even though I'd love to see a deckbuilder version of this, where luck is pushed further to the back, the stories I encounter in each game are very much dependent on the swinginess of the dice. And it's not as if there's NO planning etc. I'm doing MUCH better on my fourth play through than on my first. Caution is needed. Smart placement of units and upgrades are rewarded,

    Ok so a bumper update.
Played a few games of villainous, much fun was had and we are running one win each.
Each player picks a “villain” from the supplied options. Each receives a thematic set of cards based on their respective film which is split into two types and a villain specific board to play them onto. Each board has a win condition on it specific to that villain and cards can be played to aid your objectives or build up allies to fight off the “hero” cards That opposing players can play from one type of your deck to impede your progress.

Each player is dealing with their own board whilst trying to stop the other player achieving their goals. It’s well worth a look and the card art is beautiful too.

Next up we’ve played the opening mission of journeys in middle earth,
This is a cracking game (although I’m obviously new to all this) it’s well known so I won’t dig into all the mechanics here, but I will say the card drawing to pass tests in place of dice works well and there’s nothing like pulling of the successes you need or tripping up over a simple test at times. The ability to “stack” your deck a little with a top deck check and replace mechanic helps to give you some strategic control over next next test is neat.
The app works well and it packs all sorts of Objectives into the maps which you build as you explore.
We came soo close to winning the opening mission, which continues on anyway so I consider that a reasonable success for a first time out.

So good times, and I’ve also managed to secure a opened but not used imperial assault on ebay for £75 all in as it could be ages before a proper resupply.

So I’m still here stacking up the boxes, I think it’s fair to say this hobby is here to stay, now onto those German vegetable economy games etc....🤣

Still need to play my first game of villainous but it sounds interesting.

Nice so you've played with one character each or multiple? And which characters did you choose to play with?
It's nice that even when you fail a mission you can continue, at least up until a certain point. It can also change the next mission a bit.

Mine just shipped. I recommend just pre ordering the next expansions with Chaos Cards as soon as they have them available to pre order. I'm not missing anything for Arkham and have bought all through them.

@Bleh we are playing with 3 characters, my wife immediately declared she was going to play as legolas, which was good as his role is simpler but very powerful. I picked two in the end for additional options, I went for Aragorn and beravor which are slightly more support based, giving some top tactical backup options and serious buff to movement and exploring, some very cool cards and options came up along the way.

We were running so close to the end but we failed (although for me it felt like a victory). It’s unclear why we did but maybe I stumbled onto the fort or didn’t quite get all
the tracks (unclear as a lot dropped in at the end)

Three elite dudes dropped at the top of the map so I assumed these were the end enemies, and we literally managed to wipe them out on our last turn (losing berevor before our last turn). We wiped those out on our very last play (totally cool as I thought we’d saved the day) before the threat and the fact she was down came into play. And yet no victory stuff popped up and we were told the bandits slipped away, maybe my attention was pulled in the wrong direction.

As I said, it felt like a victory (especially for two noobs on first go) but I don’t think we can afford to fail this next one really. Next mission starts on the “battle map” so that’s going to mix things up again and I’m curious by how much, the inclusion of terrain options sounds interesting but for the few spaces on each tile it’s hard to get a sense of how it will play out.

How did yours go? Have you tried that second mission yet?

Do try to give villainous a go as we enjoyed (again though we are noobs 😬;)

It has been some time ago when I played the missions but I believe you did win the scenario. It's part of the story. I believe that the battle map continues into this. The flavor text when starting the next mission will inform you how good or bad you did :).

It's pretty hard to get all search tokens done on the adventure map, at least with 2 players. Don't know if the amount increases when playing with more players. We definitely weren't able to get all tokens done before the threat tracker reached the end.

Tip, read the info on the search tokens. They can help you identify which one can be interesting and which one you might be able to pass. That way I identified a few which eventually let to a new title. It also can help to pick a character which might be better suited.

I like how they implemented the adventure and battle maps. On the battle map you'll get some different things but I'm not going to spoil too much here. It's also a nice break between the adventure map.

Properly next time I visit my brother I'm going to play a game of villainous.

@Bleh maybe, it did give me an end of mission summary claiming they had “slipped away” and that things may be more difficult from here on, which doesn’t sound too positive. But the threat bar didn’t top out (although it would have) and berevor was down, so dunno there was a lot shaking out at the same time, nothing resolved, after our turns I just got the message.
We came away with 3xp Each, I’m assuming the mission rewards change through success?

I can recommend it for those with children of say 8+. It’s got a lot in common with its progenitor, including the boatload of lovely chunky wooden bits, but loses the occupations and a lot of the improvements, makes things less punitive and takes out some of the variability as to how the game progresses with time.

@ChiefGB That's actually a good question and honestly I don't know. We did lose a few missions but we where so caught up by it that we didn't really pay attention if the rewards were less.

It could be but I do believe it will impact the next mission a bit. Like enemies showing up earlier or so.
