Registered 15 years agoThere's a weekly evening boardgame meet a couple of minutes from st.paul's, as well as a weekly one on Sundays in crouch end. The st.paul's one is always busy, but the crouch end one is still picking up speed. I go to both, though I'e not been to st.pauls in a few weeks.
One thing to note about London On Board, is because it's so busy it can be hard to play with the same people / or play the same game twice in a row. Also, i think it takes a few visits for people to get used to you; I'm normally very friendly and forthcoming and I think some people there might not be as easily social.

Registered 17 years agoI've just noticed that Fantasy Flight Games are developing a Gears of War board game. There is literally no more information than that at the moment but I am curious as to how they can make the theme work on a board game. -

Registered 17 years agoYeah the videos are great. I loved the Space Hulk one. The Dixit video is also great, I think this might be my next purchase, it looks completely different to what I've got so far!
One of the great things about the videos and the Downtime Town website in general is that it is all really positive. He tries not to say anything negative about any of the games, and only really talks about good games. I find it rather refreshing. I think the gaming press could learn a lesson or two from DTT.
Downtime Town and Robert Florence are basically responsible for me buying both BSG and CitoW and finding a whole new awesome hobby! (as well as spending way too much money, that I don't really have, on cardboard and plastic!)
The only problem of course is that the site has been neglected for a long time now. I think Robert is busy writing his new sit-com (for BBC Scotland) and any board game reviews are publish on Rock Paper Shotgun in his Cardboard Children column. -

I used to love Consolevania back in the day - as well as the few Videogaidens I managed to watch. What does Ryan do these days? -

No idea, I've never watched Consolevania or Videogaiden. (I know, I know, I really should!) I only found out about Robert from RPS and that linked through to DTT.
What I like about Dixit is that it looks like a great game for those times when your group have just been through a epic 4 hour session of a heavy-themed game but stil have an hour to spare before everyone need to start orderting taxis, by which time people should be well on there way to having had a bit to much to drink. Seems perfect! -

It's not too expensive, it's 40 quid on Amazon, but it's by Fantasy Flight Games, not GW. It is bloody well made however. The little figures are a little cheap but the board, dials and everything else is very sturdy. The only other FFG game I have is Battlestar Galactica and they did a awesome job putting that together too.
Oh, and if you do pick up CitoW, I should tell you that there is a spelling mistake on one of the character cards, so make sure you read the FAQ on the FFG website before playing.
The problem with board games is that you can't play a short demo of it before buying like you can with console games. Also, while you have to splash out £40 on the game, everyone else is getting the same experience for free! -

Registered 17 years agoOk, it now looks like I'm the only one using this thread. It's like my own little boardgaming blog! (maybe I should get one of those)
.gif)
Anyway. I'm a little annoyed today. I initailly got my board gaming group together so I could have some people to play the Battlestar Galatica game with. Then, just for a bit of variety, I introduced them to Chaos in the Old World. Now they don't want to play anything else. Chaos has litteraly taken over everything.
People who could never be accused of being geeky in any way are reading up on the best tactics for their favorite Chaos Gods. The are obsessed with the different stratagies for each god and how to combat the player playing the Blood God! It's become the only thing they talk about when we see each other.
At the weekend I was away in Huddersfield for a wedding when I got a call from my brother, who (whom?) I had asked to feed the cat. He had decided that, since my house was empty, he would invite the rest of our group round "for a quick game of Chaos".
They left eight hours later after 2 or 3 games, having ordered a take-away and got the beers in, at 1 in the morning.
This is basically board game squatting!
Now everyone is talking about how great a night it was and how soon they can have another game. Don't get me wrong, I love Chaos, it's a fantastic game, but I want to play BSG

Registered 16 years agoI totally failed to get anyone to play BSG. I got 5 people together (I kind of high-jacked a dinner party with boardgames). We all kicked off with Dominion, but then we all got too pissed to play BSG - I was the only one who knew how to play, and people were struggling with Dominion.
Ah well. -

Registered 17 years agoChopsen - better luck next time eh!
Try to organise dedicated night for it. email everyone the rules (which can be found on the FFG website). They won't read them, but at least they have the chance.
phAge - I thought the same thing about my group, that's why I started them on BSG. It's cooperative and competitive. Give it a try.
There can also be some cooperation in Chaos. Khorne, The Blood God, is a little easier to win with if the other players don't quite know how to play their gods well. It's a perfectly valid tactic for the other gods to work together to stop him. -

Registered 16 years agoCame across this thread a week ago or something and thought, hmmm, interesting. Thought it might be fun to play some of these, mainly with my 11 year old son – get him off Borderlands! So started having a look about and last week bought the (I think new) 2 player Risk.
He’d been given Risk (Transformers version!) for his birthday a couple of years ago, we played a few games but it never quite worked – a) transformers version is shite, b) I think he was a bit young and c) doesn’t really work with two players.
So, we had a game this weekend, and both really enjoyed – he thrashed me btw! But good fun. I think after a few games when we really get the hang of it there will be some good fun to be had. I was intrigued by Carcassonne, having read the thread and looked at some of the links, so after researching it, took the plunge and bought it online – it arrived today!
Really looking forward to playing this, it looks good fun, I get the impression one of those games that’s fairly simple to learn the basics of, but not to master.
I’ve looked at some other games – a lot of them appear complicated to say the least, but intriguing, but I’ll see how we get on with these two for starters!
So cheers for the heads up EG’ers! Any other games that you would recommend (Settlers of Catan)? -

Registered 17 years agoI've never played Catan or Carcassonne so I can't really comment but I will say that from what I've heard they appear simple enough. I have played Risk but I'm not a massive fan. Like you say, it is a bit shit and with only two players it can become a little bit of a slog. Although, if there was a Transformers version when I was a kid I would have lapped it up .gif)
Maybe if you're playing Catan or Carcassonne you could get some of his mate together to play it. It might make it a bit more fun for him.
Ticket to Ride might also be a good choice. Or if your lad is into the undead (and lets face it, if he's 11, he should be!!) then Zombies!!! might be fun. Domionion is a good fun card game which is taking over the world at the moment. It's like the Sims of card gaming. It's everywhere! Citadels is also good.
Oh oh oh, I've just had a great idea for you. Two words....SPACE HULK!! Space Maries vs deadly aliens in a vast old rusting space ship. It's for 2 players and the rules are simple. Everyone (and I mean everyone) loves Space Hulk. It's perfect for an 11 year old lad and the 3rd edition looks fantastic. It's really well put togeher. The only problem of course is that the 3rd edition is a bastard to get hold of

Registered 16 years agoCheers KoS, both Zombies and Space Hulk sound good - you're right about 11 year olds, sombies, aliens and space marines. I'll check them out.
I looked at Dominion but wondered whether that would be too complicated! a couple of years ago my lad was into some card game thing - cant remember what it was now, Yu-Gi-Oh i think, and we tried to play that a few times, but could not get my head round it all!
I thought about getting some of his mates round, but we'll see - such games arent cool enough I suspect! theres a Warhammer club at his school though.
Maybe I'm getting nostalgic in my old age but there does seem to be something inherently healthy about playing a board game - human interaction, no electricty needed, no DLC (Expansion packs excepted), no patches, no crashes, a throwback to simpler more innocent times. Largley bullshit I know, but i think probably a grain of truth in that somehow. better way to spend your evening than watching the lateset X factor, Britains Got Talent, Im a celeb shite anyway!
I'll check out zombies and Space Hulk, cheers. -

Dominion isn't complicated at all, it's rather simple in fact and is great with 2 players as well as 5.
Just be careful about the Warhammer club. While it sounds fun and harmless, if he starts getting into that stuff he'll need to leave school and get a job down the pitt in order for him to pay for the little figures. Those things can get expensive!!.gif)
Oh and +1 to the innocent healthy image for board games. At that age it's a great way for kids to play with their mates while you can keep an eye on them I guess. -

Still, Amazon are sending out another copy first class, free of charge, so can't really complain I guess... -

Registered 11 years agoHaving played both Carcassonne and Catan I can recommend both of them.
Carcassonne is really easy and fun, even if just to see what kind of weird-ass castles you're making. It allows for easy playing or more strategic thinking if you're up for it. Plus, it costs about 1/100th of a warhammer addiction, even with all the expansions.
Catan is a bit more involving with a bit more rules to it, but it's still simple and fairly straightforward. It's a very good introduction to board games to anyone who's never played anything but monopoly and snakes and ladders. -
