    Anyone played Onitama before? It's like chess but with less pieces and fewer moves - moves are dictated by cards that rotate back and forth between players so you can always see what moves your opponent can play.

    Looks quite interesting. Considering it as present for mate's birthday, just wondered if anyone had tried it out?

    @CosmicFuzz

    Yes. It's basically easy chess but way shorter. Has expansions that change up the game a little.

    I think the app is free if you want to try it out. I've played the app and it's a good game for sure.

    really fun game, it's very cheap and small box. I love it whenever we play.

    Yes, with the proviso that both players like abstract games. Like chess, it is not fun at all if one player is a lot better than the other as they will almost always win. You only have to look 1 or 2 moves ahead so it's hardly brain burning.

    The expansion with the blue water spirit is worth buying to make the decision space a bit wider and less predictable. We always play with that now. I really love it. I used to love playing chess with my Dad when I was a kid and still often make a mental comparison to most games with chess... it's such an absolutely exceptional classic board game

    Onitama is nice bite sized chess with a a variable setup. It's well worth the small entrance fee.

    Just managed my first solo game of dune, got crushed.
    Watched the moviefilm just last night and whilst that was also an ďexperienceĒ it was a considerably less engaging one by the end.

    That harvest spice card can do one!! Or maybe itís my fault for letting it stack.

    First impressions are strong, really enjoyed it.
    Iím not sure how long term this kind of game solo will bring me back, but I canít let that kind of humiliation stand. So far, so rather good.

    Paul, vs the two advised starter ones, every first game is just a learning one really. Not to say I wasnít trying though lol. That and Iím probably shit 😬

    Spent the weekend playing Altar Quest and have come away very impressed and eager to play more. The dice system in these games is great and the tweaks to the modular deck system they've made really ups the choices you have over Street Masters. Really like it. Seems to be a tonne of content there too.

    I do have one issue however, as I just noticed last night that it is the whitest game on earth. Out of the 15 available characters and the 20-30+ lurkers and villains etc, all of them, bar an (admittedly badass) horse guy and a few monster villains, are white. Humans, dwarfs, elves, hobbit things, witches, vampires, everyone is either a white guy or woman. It's so weird.

    How, when you have the freedom and license to create an entire fantasy world from scratch, do you then just end with a whole load of white people? It's just kinda fucked up and makes me question the people behind it.

    Anyway. That's my bit.

    Yeah, representation in games is pretty terrible. At a guess itís at that awkward growth stage where itís relatively mainstream and yet still mostly designed by and targeted at white males. I saw people online praising the latest Uwe Rosenberg game because...it features a woman on the side of the box. Thatís how noticeable it is, that something as seemingly trivial as that gets kudos for being a progressive change (and also came with internet fuckwits complaining about it somehow).

    A few years ago it was noted that sheep were more heavily represented on board game boxes than women. There has been a slight improvement recently but there's still a long way to go. Alma Mater was slated / boycotted due to being whiter than white too.

    When will fantasy games learn that not every woman has massive breasts?

    Recent Tascini / Rahdo debacles points to this being true. Colonialism as a cozy go to theme is also getting a lot of scrutiny. EG favourite No Pun Included did a whole video on the topic just days ago.

    Sad thing is that some say "Look at how inclusive video game culture is" and I can't help but wonder if those saying that has ever visited a videogame forum.

    Kickstarter has gone mad today with new projects. Most notably, the new Root expansions (Marauder + new hirelings + Clockwork 2), which are actually not UK-friendly at all. They've decided not to even try, so not only is shipping more to UK than the rest of the EU, but then there will be VAT+fees to pay on delivery. Definitely one to wait for retail for.

    Brexit. It just keeps giving.

    Even though it's Cryptozoic I'm really excited for the Dark Knight Returns board game. It's nice to see a major commercial publisher doing a solitaire game.

    @Anhunedd ffs.

    @mother, I half watched the mvm preview earlier, not sure Iím sold on it. The prototype is clearly very early which maybe didnít help but I didnít really see much that grabbed me. Though as I said, I was half watching.

    Didnít cotton it was a solo only game, Iíll take another look but I doubt Batman comes cheap....

    I rented Dominion Intrigue from the library. The box says 30 minutes but we had to call it quits after 2.5 hours as it was getting late, dinner was ready and the kids had school the next day.
    At a guess, I think it would have been another hour before we finished.

    Even if I take the 'first time playing' pace into account, I'm sure there's no way we could finish a game in 30 minutes.

    Is the time on the box wildly optimistic or are we just waaaaaay slow. Does anyone have experience with Domion (Intrigue)?

    Seems excessive, unless everyone was avoiding exhausting 3 decks on purpose?
