    Anyone here brighton based? Been looking at the board game meetups online and thinking about going, I'm just a bit crap at doing social things like that completely on my own. None of my current group of friends are into board games in the slightest so I'll have to bite the bullet and just go at some point...
    Yo I'm near Brighton. There's the Dice Saloon which has a meetup group called Brighton pub boardgamers that meets Sundays and Mondays, and there's other meetups at the Craft Beer Company on Wednesday and Thursday.

    I've been to a few, not as many as I've been hoping to. The dice saloon has just moved literally this week so I'll be checking out the new place hopefully soon.

    Played Rising Sun last night. Man oh man it's a pretty looking game, especially with the roll-out map. I came a close second with the Lotus clan, which I think was alright for my first time. But it got really busy towards the end, with a bunch of people jumping up the score track.

    Highly recommended, though judging from the number of figures in it I'd imagine it's a fairly expensive boardgame.

    @Gregolution I could try to organise something. Am based in Oxford, and might be able to wangle a gaming space. Hmm, I will have a think...

    Any thoughts on wargames? I've dabbled with Conflict of Heroes which is a tactical level combat game but nothing much beyond that (also dabbling with a couple of COIN games). I sometimes look at GMT games and there are a lot of games available covering many historical periods.

    I guess the big negative is that I'm very unlikely to find anyone willing to play and the often very steep learning curve of rules. Though I gather many people play solo two sided without a problem - block games are an exception. I think you have to have an interest in the period rather than seeing it as a standard game.

    Thirty page plus rulebooks are the norm, it seems. Despite this there's still something about them that attracts me. I like reading history books and it seems interesting to play a game about periods I like.

    Another plus appears to be that wargames, while expensive in comparison to euros, have small print runs and often hold or increase in value.

    On one hand I feel like I'd be wasting money but on the other hand I think wargames offer something that euros and Ameritrash games don't.

    I'm getting fed up waiting for City of Kings and Lords of Hellas. If one doesn't arrive soon I'm going to end up buying something...

    @Tonka oh btw... I played the Robot solo AI (RFTG) last night for the first time. It's really cool! I don't usually get on with solo board gaming - I think Spirit Island is the only game I've solo'd much, but I can see myself playing that quite a bit.

    I find the iconography absolutely genius in this game. I guess it puts many people off as it brings a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, it's really clever.

    @Gregolution the actual physical AI? The one that comes with that expansion whats name I simply can't commit to memory no matter how many times I look it up.

    Is the expansion good for anything else? There's something about goals isn't there?

    Yes there are goals and some new cards / starting worlds.

    Personally I think goals will make a huge difference to how strategic it plays but I haven't tried it yet. They're exactly like the Milestones on the board on Terraforming Mars which I think are one of the best things about that game.

    Damn... I had a look at Rahdo playing Auztralia and it looks like a bag of fun. Rather cheap to for a Kickstarter. I could nab my friends minis from Mansions of Madness (he wouldn't notice).

    6-player game of Betrayal at House on the Hill yesterday.

    Tried it with 4 and 6 players now, and can't say that I find either very interesting.

    For a game that easily drags over 3 or 4 hours, the amount of interesting decisions you can make seems very, very limited, and the randomness often makes it hilariously unbalanced.

    Feels almost like a Talisman with slightly different movement rules and more downtime. Still, other people seem to enjoy it, so maybe it's just me.

    We're meant to be playing that with 7 people on the weekend - I've played it with 4 and really enjoyed it. Any major differences with 7 people bar the time it takes?

    7? Thought it was only up to 6?

    It's this one, yeah?

    As for differences, it seems to me that the haunt-player gets a hefty boost to his or her powers with more players, while the explorers are less powerful, due to having fewer turns to explore and upgrade stats/equipment.

    In our 6-player game, the haunt started after about an hour and a half and, realistically, we never stood a chance against the haunt-player. Game went on for maybe two hours before we conceded.

    Might just have been unlucky, but with a game with that many moving parts it seems that an unbalanced endgame will occur more often than not.

    Bloody video games! Turned on the ps4 for the first time in ages as the misses is out for the night and what? A 45 minute update? No thanks!

    Board games would never do that to me.

    Ah - it's a friends game and he's assumed it plays up to 8. Guess we're not playing that one then!

    On your recommendation I bought Secret Hitler, can't wait to try it out this weekend with 7 of us :)

    Try setting up the Gallerist on less than 45 minutes. Those are really pleasurable 45 minutes though.

    @Tonka

    Really? The Gallerist is like 5, maybe 10 minutes to set up if you're slow.

    @rice_sandwich Really?

    Well obviously not since it takes me 45 minutes. I have to carefully check each step in the manual though AND I'm constantly surprised by how long it takes.
