    A Quiet Place - 8.5/10

Terrific sci-fi/horror film which I think suits a home watch perfectly. Just make sure you have the lights off and the sound cranked up!

The film's about a family that has to live in silence for the most part to avoid detection from monsters lurking in the area that are hyper sensitive to sound. A very simple idea and I think it works really well. When something does happen and a sound is triggered it leads up to some really tense moments.

The film does deliver some pretty effective jump scares. I did launch a couple of times but this film isn't really about that. There's not much in the way of gore that I recall either.

I did like the creature design but I think it would have been much better if they didn't show as much of them off in daylight. Seeing them reminded me of the end of Cloverfield where you finally see the monster and it looks like a grumpy, shaved squirrel.

What I think really makes the film work though is all the performances from the cast. Everyone is in top form especially Emily Blunt. They manage to portray genuine horror and fear for what's out there. Well worth a watch.

    Edit: Typos

I liked the film a lot but they were the most telegraphed jump scares I’ve ever seen. If you thought they were effective I can only assume you’ve never seen a horror film before.

And the creature design was shite.

I'm just terrible with these things though. I even launched from my chair at one point watching Ratatouille.

After we spoke about terminator 4 the other day I watched:

The Titan: Its really weird. It's got the building blocks of a good sci-fi/horror but it chooses to do the wrong thing with every single one of them, largely, I assume because it has absolutely no budget.

90% of the film is shot in an half built luxury estate, it can only afford special effects for the last 15 minutes and they somehow ended up with Sam Worthington in the lead role, which makes an already boring movie just interminable. For a story about the forced evolution of astronauts, the only super power we get for most of the movie is that they are really good at swimming.

It's really frustrating because this could have been great. The setup is good, the plot is initially really interesting and then it just dies for 90 minutes, shitting the bed periodically until someone puts it out of its misery.

I GUESS YOU COULD CALL IT THE SHITE-AN

    4/10

A Quiet Place and the upcoming Jack Ryan show just weird me out. It's Jim from The Office. It's Jim. He will always be Jim.

Next you'll be telling me Andy from Parks and Rec is now a swole superhero.

I finished Justice League. Genuinely one of the oddest, most disjointed, ill thought out films I've ever seen. I just. What?

It’s awful and a mess of a film. Everything from the shit bad guy to the JL themselves is a shit excuse for 2 hours of punching and explosions.

Jack Reacher Never Go Back 3/10. First one was ok, this was a waste of time.

It's just odd. Everything that hasn't been reshot has been recoloured to daylight so the costumes look weird, scenes like the first superman fight look over saturated and all the buildings in the background have their lights on.

Which is distracting enough without you sitting there thinking 'pick up the box, you twats'.

The strangest thing is, I think it's probably the worst one yet but it isn't aggressively bad like the others. I genuinely hate the other DC films but this one is to stupid to really care about.

Yeah odd is the best way to describe. It actually made me laugh a few times. Like a "what the fuck is happening" kind of laugh. It's so fucking weird.

    Jaws 2

Always had a soft spot for this but this is probably the first time I've watched it in its entirety for 20 years. It's not great. All the early scenes are either poorly scripted exposition or failed attempts at copying the small town stuff that Spielberg so perfectly nailed in the first one. The final third is still pretty good though.

Is it this one or the weird one with Michael Caine as a sex pest where the shark basically just commits suicide?

This is the one that Brody lures the shark into bitting the power cable. The first 45 minutes of the film is dedicated to setting up the fact that there's a power cable under the water and that the shark would be attracted to the sound of Brody banging on said cable.

Oh yeah, and inexplicably the town still had the same mayor despite him being directly responsible for several deaths.

Ha yeah. And everyone thinks Brody is crazy because he thinks there might be a shark in the water. Even though like 2 years ago a shark ate a bunch of people. There's a scene where a shark expert comes to look at a killer whale with bite marks all over it. And she says its probably not a shark as its unlikely that a shark would be in these waters. And Brody doesn't tell her about the shark that ate like quite a few people a few years earlier.

Rolling back a bit, I actually thought justice league was much better than bvs. Not exactly hard to achieve, but at least I got some enjoyment out of this one. Think it came from having the bar not so much lowered but disintegrated after that.

Really? I can't remember that. I do remember the cable & weird forgetfulness of people about the earlier events though!

    Burning

A Korean movie about a young man who falls in love with a waifish Stacey. He then gets beta cucked by a rich Chad named Ben, played by Glenn from The Walking Dead. There is much angst and dancing to jazz music (it's based on a Murakami short story), and it develops in mysterious and unexpected ways.

In all seriousness, it looks amazing, and has some great performances. Just don't go in expecting much in the way of closure, and you'll be fine.

    9.1/10

    Antman and the wasp. 7/10

Last 25 minutes gives it an extra point. Was fun. I think I pretty much rate nearly every marvel a 6 or 7.

    Chronicle

Excellent. I found the constant shaky hand cam very tiring, actually got a headache afterwards. I will take a point off for that.

I went in blind, now I can see even seeing the poster would have tipped me off as to where it was going to go. As it stands, it developed in very surprising ways. I guess the home camera quality footage gave me the false impression it was low budget.

Justice League. The very definition of average out of 10. Not bad by any means but completely unmemorable. At least the evil minions were a bit better developed than in Suicide Squad. Might as well make the whole thing cgi as the human element was only there 20% of the time. Flash's slowmo running looked goofy. Wonder Woman seems to have all the abilities of the Flash so why bother having him in the picture. Aquaman being a "good ole boy" was a bit weird too seeing as he spends most of his time underwater or in Norway/Sweden.

Batman: The Dark Knight returns.. 2 part animated series with Peter Weller voicing the Bat. Very good. I liked the Joker being full on psychotic in this one. Asking a tv presenter whether he has any more mugs before smashing the one he is holding and slitting presenters throat with it. Not to mention killing the entire audience just for shits and giggles. Why don't we ever see this Joker in the films.

    Ant-Man and The Wasp

Enjoyed it, was a fun romp. Better than the first one (for me) and also well made. Plus it’s also great to see Michelle Pfeiffer who has transitioned from smoking hot to MILF to GILF quite nicely!

    Ant-Man and The Wasp - 7/10

A bit of light relief after Infinity War although the events take place beforehand. I think it's a fun romp that's better than the original.

The plot is all kinds of mumbo-jumbo that introduces us to the quantum realm, which Marvel will no doubt use in future films. It seems as though everyone in the cast had a blast doing this. They are all on fine form, especially Michael Peña. Walton Goggins is always great to see on screen too.

Got to mention the effects in this film which are really well done. I think there's some very creative use of changes of size during the films action sequences. There's a lot more action in this compared to the original and there's a much better villain too.

There are two credits sequences. I think the first one is worth staying for (and should have been included in the main film as it's quite significant) but the final end of credits one isn't.

Been trying to find some movies to download onto my iPad through Sky Q as I go on holiday on Wednesday. I have to say the content on Sky Q is absolute crap, I can only assume that all the good stuff in on other services these days

There are definitely no fun romps on there

I remember when 'romp' was used in tabloid articles about some celeb in a kiss and tell story. Them were the good old days.

Hmmm, doesn't seem like there's enough romp to properly sustain the running time.
