Enjoyed John Wick 3. The magic is starting to wear a little thin now, though; when the fighting gets a little dull in a film that's 99% fighting, something's going wrong.

    No.

    No, it is not.

But it does have a practical, real-world solution for dealing with a roomful of ninjas.

    Ha, thanks for sharing that.

I was watching some outside xbox thing the other day about ninjas which made me chuckle. I don't remember verbatim, something about ninjas being so good at killing you unexpectably and at any time you should consider it a personal favour you're not being murdered by a ninja eight now.

Unless you have an uzi then fucking bring it.

Despite the terrible titles, these are actually pretty good! The basic premise of the first one is that it's Groundhog Day, but in a slasher movie. The slasher bits themselves are pretty tame, but there's enough meat on the premise to deliver plenty of fun and surprise.

The sequel takes the first premise, and runs with it even further. It gets pretty crazy, though kind of falls apart towards the end. It's still very much worth a watch with the first movie, even though it isn't quite as tight an experience.

Both together are a solid 8/10. Definitely watch them if you get a chance. I hope they make a third!
I'm glad the second one is good. The first was really enjoyable. I'm totally smitten with Jessica Rothe so her success is something I can celebrate as her future husband.
Yeah she's the best thing about the movies. She really does the black comedy bits well.

    The Favourite (Blu-ray)
Going against the general mood here but I thought it was good, but not excellent. All the performances were top notch, including the supporting cast.

    Prospect

It's a low budget indie space opera about a father and daughter who are just barely scraping by as prospectors on an alien planet. The dad gets some info on one last big job that will net them enough to get to the core planets for good.

Things don't work out as planned.

I absolutely loved this one too pieces. It looks stunning and has a really nice feel to it. At times it reminded me of Stalker, other times of Moon.

It's not as brooding as any of those, the story is a straight up Western rehash, and there are some dodgy scenes, but this film got heart. The props are fantastic throughout. The world feels real. The acting is great.

    A must see

Yeah watched that last night. Great film, the humorous tone/elements work alongside the drama and really amplify the impact of the final scenes.

Also on Sky now is Upgrade.

I really didn't expect much from this but it delivers.

Elements of Matrix combined with 80' 90's B Action Sci fi classics. Its not perfect and you will work out where it's headed fairly earlier on.

It's violent so not one for the kids but does well without having a megabudget but most of all its fun to watch.

Not as good as the others. I do love the cray cray of these movies. They are stupid as all hell but fun. I'm looking forward to Hobbs and Shaw. Bring it. family/10

Need for Speed? You mean Fast and the Furious 8 or its other moniker Fate of the Furious?

Thought this was excellent. Really funny too. A tight, well put together Sci fi thriller with some extraordinary fight sequences.

Also a great ninja reference. :D

Endgame. 7.5/10. Was ok and for superfans a satisfying conclusion I assume. Whilst they were aware of how hokey some of it was I just couldn't bring myself to really go along with it all. The humour I generally enjoy so that was a plus. Anyway this old fart will probably not bother with future entries as now it has been taking over by millenials.

So I did! Great recommendation, terrific watch, puts bigger budget films to shame. As you say, great sense of place. Even gave me Firefly vibes in places (Weeps gently). Solid 8/10

Saw it last night and I agree. Brilliant film, great cast. The humour and erama are brilliantly juxtaposed. It could quite easily have been a bit crass if it favoured one over the other but it is handled just right.

    Upgrade - 8/10

Aside from some dodgy SFX & dialogue, I found it quite entertaining...especially the fight scenes.

    Get Out

Good film. Doesn't bother trying to do anything new, as such, but focuses on making you feel as uncomfortable as possible and gives you what you want from that sort of caper.

Doesn’t bother trying to do anything new? Strange comment to make about a film that was universally praised for its originality.

    John Wick 3 8/10

If you liked the first two then you'll definitely like this. Loads of inventively violent set pieces and it explores JW's backstory a bit more.

It leaves things open for a 4th film.

    The Favourite

Good. Did think it lost steam in its last third, but then i don't know what i was really expecting to happen. Olivia Colman is great (as usual), but thought both Rachael Weisz and Emma Stone were terrific as well. First half is very funny though, the era being ripe for absurdist comedy that the director excels in, with Colman single handedly bringing the tragedy of the film. Not sure why i didn't love it though, i felt the same way about Death of Stalin afterwards, it left me a bit cold. Which i don't quite get as i normally like books, tv, films etc that political skew.

    4/5
