Venom - 5/10 - Really average but reasonably watchable.

I am Mother - 7/10 - I liked it but I felt like it could have done with a little more exposition behind the back ground to the set up of the story. Just a few more hints as to how the world got like that in the final pay off to the story I think would have helped a lot. Anyway a solid film for a Netflix original.

    Diego Maradona

I thought the first hour dragged and went on too long, but second half was gripping. Documentary in the same vein (and by the same guy who did) Senna. So 100% period footage with a few voiceovers by friends / Maradona/ historians to add context. I enjoyed it, my mates loved it, but we all agreed you may as well watch on TV rather than the cinema. It is long and all low quality unremastered footage which adds authenticity but isn't exactly 4k stunning.

    8/10

    Happy Death Day 2U - 5/10

Not as good as the original.

    Edit: Reworded for clarity.

    Sabata (1969) - 10/10

I loved this film series as I kid and decided to rewatch the original. It did not disappoint. Lee Van Cleef is cool as fuck as the title character and all of the larger than life support cast are superb too.

There's so much I enjoyed about this film. It's got that terrific musical score, great characters, everyone chewing up the scenery and lots and lots of gunfights. The only thing cooler than Lee Van Cleef in this is his fucking gun!

He doesn't even break into a sweat as he takes on anyone that come at him. A sharpshooter that never misses and he's got all kinds of tricks up his sleeve. I think the villains in this film are just as good as the main characters including Banjo, Carrincha and Alley Cat.

I'm not sure if the two other films are as good as this one but this was a pure joy to watch.

Itís not. Thatís what I meant. There isnít any real focus on the killer at all. Itís not a spoiler. Just badly worded description. And no, thatís not a spoiler either. :)
If it's any consolation, you also revealed the plot twist, too.

    Birdman

Saw this had come up on Netflix and fancied reacquainting myself. Everyone in it is superb, even the guy from Hangover isn't irritating.

Such an assured thumbing of the nose to both billion dollar blockbusters culture and the pretensiousness of the theatre scene with a well judged sprinkling of ambiguity for good measure.

The film works on its own merits and also by casting Keaton it creates a meta which you can't help but wonder how much it echoes life.

Special mention to the cinematography as it was what I remembered most acutely from first viewing and will no doubt be what I remember most tangibly going forwards. I felt like I knew that theatre, its workings and the street it's on intimately by the time the credits rolled. Bravo.

Now going to watch Thing again.

No need for a review for that. It's the single best body horror movie I can think of and it has Kurt Russell at his most swoon tastic ruggedness.

Sad to hear happy death day 2 u is a bit pants as I really enjoyed the original and seemed to develop a slight crush on tree. Iíll still give it a watch at some point.

It's not though. I thought it was decent, it doubles down on the premise of the first film and goes really crazy.

I also enjoyed Happy Death Day 2 U more or less as much as the original. It is a bit different and many of Beastmaster's points are accurate, I just don't necessarily agree that they're bad things.
  • Deleted user 26 June 2019 08:01:35
Yeah I quite enjoyed it. It's not as good as the original but it's definitely watchable.

    ESCAPE PLAN

I wanted something simple to watch and this fitted the bill nicely. It's as dumb as rocks and predictable but sometimes it's nice to just sit back and enjoy the ride. It's just what I was in the mood for. In another time and mood I would probably dislike this but last night was the right time to watch it! escapeing/10

    A Field In England

This has been sitting on the Sky+ box for years and I finally got round to it...

Nonsensical, sinister, funny, and just way better than I dared hope.

It's rare I finish a film and feel compelled to immediately rewatch it.

    10/10

Edit: I should also also say that the imagery and cinematography were glorious.

I love A Field in England and could do with rewatching it as well. Reese Shearsmiths face upon emerging from the tent is utterly batshit.

    Toy Story 4 - 80/100

Gave me everything I wanted from a Toy Story sequel. The animation is incredible, lovely (not entirely predictable) story, great new characters and some lump in throat moments. Kids loved it. I thought it was great too.

Shazam! 6/10. It had its moments, and was one of the better outputs for DC but overall found it to be a bit silly.

    Snatch

I love this feel - it feels like a top yarn heard in a certain type of drinking establishment. A fun range of characters, all well portrayed. Just a lot of fun to watch.

I wish Guy Ritchie still made films like that. Lock Stock and Snatch like you say are just such good fun. Ritchie had a distinctive and unique style and really could have been a British Scorsese or Tarantino or someone. But no.

    Happy Death Day 2U
It was quite fun as the set up for the time loop is not something you would expect in this horror film

    7/10

The other film (this is was not my choice) was

Escape Room (not the one on netfllix)
Utter dogshit horror film, only Deborah Ann Woll is only good, the rest of the cast are just awful. Most people were looking on their phones during the film, much to the annoyance of the person who owned the film (of course he was rolling his eyes during the whole of Happy Death Day 2U before hand apparently) Worst of all the film takes it self so seriously, when its writer hack shit

    2/10
