Sunshine goes downhill way more than just a bit in the last couple of reels. It's so fucking lazy to turn it into a horror film in space.

I mean, we have Event Horizon for that.

I thought Sunshine was amazing, personally. The last part didn't ruin it for me at all.

And while I guess I could see various writing things that don't make sense if you think about them, I wasn't thinking about them while I was watching the movie. I was enjoying myself too much to notice, basically.

Both Sunshine and Event Horizon start so well. Then the actual plot kicks in and they very rapidly turn into utter shit.

*whole film is about people going crazy and having hallucinations when too close to the sun*

Nerds: hey this thing which happened to Cappa when he got close to the sun seems like a massive tonal shift and super far fetched ruined the film for me

Yeah, it's a well-trodden reddit theory that Cappa has a total break after the Icarus 1 thing, but it doesn't really weigh up either.

I don't care who trod on it, it's what I thought after I saw it at the cinema (it is an INCREDIBLE cinematic experience).

I've loved everything that Danny Boyle has done

Oh come on. Event Horizon is criminally undervalued. Interestingly I've heard some people describe it as an unofficial prequel to the Warhammer 40k universe.

I'm guessing these films were too formulaic.

Event Horizons sets were incredible and Adrian Biddle’s lensing made it look even more gorgeous.

I've never watched sunshine. You are all talking about the Danny Boyle one, right?

@JamboWayOh - only undervalued if you highly rate plots that require characters to embody “Ero, I r do stupidz”

They both are to be fair. Sunshine is at least ambiguous.

I just refuse to believe people didn't act logically in this film where the physically impossible propulsion system opens up a portal to another dimension.

It just completely took me out of the moment

That's a dumb cop out. Human behaviour is not dependent on scientifically plausible technology.

Films would be boring if characters made the right decisions all the time. Even worse without irrational ones.

You are implying that I have a faulty sense of wonder.

I don't, my sense of wonder is the best, one of the biggest, actually. I had it tested and they said it was at genius levels of wonder.

No, they would be well written.

Make a poor decision because thats your character. Not because they plot requires you to, even if that decision totally contravenes the entire character up to that point.

    Happy Death Day

Was roped into watching this. Wasn't actually that bad.

It's a dumb timeloop slasher comedy that doesn't take itself seriously, but doesn't completely cross into parody territory either. It's halfway between Scream and Scary Movie, with a bit of Groundhog Day/Russian Doll thrown in.

Part of its appeal is the 90s nostalgia it evokes. Quite short, too, so the pace is tight. Worse ways to kill an hour and a bit.

    6/10

Sunshine i’d put in the same bracket as event horizon, in so much as I thought it was shit too.
Probably too intellectual for me or something.

It's a lazy writing style where some writers can only seem to get things to happen and their plot to move forward due to their characters behaving stupidly. The Walking dead would be the go to perfect text book example of this.

You can drive plot forward and have things happen without resorting to stupid character actions being the constant driver of such things.

You can of course still have things happen due to the odd stupid action of a character. It's when virtually everything happens due to stupidity you realise you are dealing with a writer of limited range and imagination.

The stupidity plot driver becomes particularly annoying when all of your characters are meant to be really capable. For instance a team of astronauts.
