Been a long time since I've watched it but what's the dumb behaviour in Event Horizon?

I was really referring to Sunshine. Like you it's been so long since I saw Event Horizon I really don't remember it that well. My only lasting impression is it was shit.

Conversely, Chernobyl the series is essentially all about incredibly smart people making incredibly stupid decisions. Which happens a lot in real life. It's a bad example, being mostly non-fiction, and also the product of the sometimes absurd and nightmarish bureaucracy of the USSR, but it brings up a distinction that stupidity isn't necessarily the problem, but rather the internal consistency, or believability of said stupidity.

From what I remember about Sunshine, the end being shit didn't have anything to do with the characters and more to do with the plot being pap and taking a pointless turn into crap horror. Event Horizon on the other hand is wonderfully camp IMO, to the extent where the characters' motivations/intelligence are completely moot.

Dumbest thing in EV was Fishburne's tiny captains chair.

@sirtacos Some of that would surely come under it being stupidity with the benefit of hindsight though and systemic stupidity which is a completely different type of stupidity.

Fishburne requires, nay, needs a big captain's chair for his big dick energy.

    The Favourite
Everything in this film oozes quality. Yet it bored me to tears. I think it was just a case of me not giving a shit about any of the well played, beutifully shot characters.

In the end I ended up thinking about why the photographer had chosen ultra wide angle for certain shots (sometimes as an indication of strong emotional distress, other times just because) Why the pan to dolly shot was used more than once (made me snap out ofthe moment completely the second time) Why the sound person used that "plonk...plonk...plonk..." thing when it didn't end on some crescendo.

I lost all emotional engagement and endded up thinking about how the film was put together.

Very well made film, not my cup of tea

I don't care who trod on it, it's what I thought after I saw it at the cinema (it is an INCREDIBLE cinematic experience).

I've loved everything that Danny Boyle has done
I'm a huge fan of most of his work, but The Beach and Trance are pretty bad. Both still have great moments, but overall they aren't great films.

Absolutely fucking awful. It is and definitely felt like a vehicle for two people who were massive at the time.

The Beach, 28 days Later and Sunshine are all written by Alex Garland.

Alex Garland was hamstrung by studio interference on The Beach. The novel is fucking brilliant. All his books were great, shame he stopped writing novels.

His films are pretty great too. Annihilation recently, though he didn't write the novel that was based on.

Yup, Ex Machina is fantastic too. He should be given as much money as Nolan and given the same auteur status, I think he's been a bit unlucky. Very talented guy.

That veered very close to Donald Trump parody.

True. Chernobyl was a bad example all around. Can't think of anything else though. Russian Doll? The protag acts stupidly and irrationally a lot of the time but it works because of the context and because of who she is.

Shallow Grave and Trainspotting are both great. They get progressively worse from there.
