    Bloodsport

Been a long time since I've watched it. I'd forgotten what a truly magnificent film it is. Jean-Claude van Damme is breathtaking. His slow motion screams of anguish after Chong Lee throws the salt in his eyes is up there with the most powerful scenes in cinema history. I did find the shot of his buttocks after he'd bedded the reporter both gratuitous and unneeded though. On Netflix now.

Shoutout for the young actor playing JCVD in a flashback who has the best comedy accent ever.

I'm pretty sure it's dubbed by Van Damme doing a high voice.

I've heard this but not sure if it's actually an urban myth.

I hadn't actually heard it was a thing. It just looks like it's dubbed and it sounds like Van Damme doing a voice.

I think I read that it was a bad recording and done in post production so it gives the impression that it was dubbed. Regardless I fucking love the film. Especially as the real Frank Dux is consistently called a massive liar.

I watch it once a year and never tire of Bloodsport. The incredibly sexual relationship between Frank and Jackson keeps me coming back everytime.

Also the real Frank Dux is worth reading up on as well and whether he's a massive bull shitter.

EDIT: Heh, just talking about it again has made me want a re watch. It only came back on Netflix today but when I loaded it up it loaded at the end of the film where hes boarding the plane from the last time I saw it on there. Weird that its saved the place seeing as how it was removed.

Indeed, the fact that he says with a straight face that he was approached by the CIA to enter this tournament as a way to apprehend some big underworld players but at the same time managed to casually win this incredibly difficult and dangerous tournament.

I love all these hardman master bullshitter stories. Frank Dux's is hilarious but also probably fairly sad once you start pulling away at the threads of his life.

Heh, I've just been reading about this Dux guy.

Dux says the reason he no longer has a sword he was presented with at the Kumite is because he sold it in a failed attempt to buy the freedom of a boat of orphans who he later rescued from pirates
    My favourite bit.

I prefer Kickboxer myself, but might watch Bloodsport later because it's been a while.

    The Social Network - 7/10

Highly watchable, with great writing and performances, but essentially TV movie stuff.

    Braven

Jason Mamoa is a lumberjack and he's ok - he's also does a passable Rambo against a gang of drug smugglers his wife also handles herself well. It starts slowly, but well paced once it gets going. A fun watch.

    7/10

Mmnnnah. Kickboxer is wonderful and Tong-po is a great bad guy but Bloodsport is like a real street fighter and has got the guy off Revenge of The Nerds in it.

    It just edges it.

Which one is the one where JCVD goes on a purely platonic, non-sexual sightseeing date with his co-badass

Yeah, I mean Kickboxer inspired me and my mate to "train" in my parents garden by whacking each other with long sticks. So it had an impact on me but Bloodsport has more ass whuppin' so is the better film.

Even in my preen teen naivety I recognized that Dudikoff was no student of the martial arts.

Its Roger Moore levels of kung foolery.

The Quest is my favorite JCVD movie, also featuring Roger Moore funnily enough. It's not from the same era as Bloodsport, AWOL etc but it's definitely a pleasant throwback to those simpler times.

I found the story more elegant and Kurt's motivations more understandable in Kickboxer. After rewatching Bloodsport last night I was shocked by how clunky the exposition and story setup were handled, especially considering how basic the story is. Then there was the Jackson character that we're meant to care about and, although he's a good character, he's just some guy Van Damme met the day before the tournament.

Kickboxer has the Mr Miyagi character and his daughter, which basically become Kurt's family over time and further motivation to win, especially after Tong Po's dastardly deed. Then there's the drunken dancing bar scene and the final showdown with Tong Po which is absolutely classic.
