I always thought The Matrix must've had a Star Wars thing going on, i.e. the Wachowskis hoped to make a trilogy but weren't sure the first one would be succesfull enough so they made sure it worked well as a stand-alone film.

Either way, the biggest problem with the sequels IMO is that most of the really cool stuff had already been done by the end of the first one. Things like bullet-time cam, martial arts combat with superhuman speed and strength (not new overall, it had been done in Asian films, but new for this type of flick), the green/blue hues, etc.
The sequels still had fun gimmicks (e.g. Bane/Smith being able to take over a human mind) and awesome scenes (the lobby fight comes to mind) but the two put together didn't have half as much as the original did.

Also, the story meanders for four hours from 'the machines are coming to end Zion' to 'Neo saves the day/ends the war' with barely anything relevant happening.

I remember a pretty shitty and frustrating game with will smiths wife as well. A film that would be perfect for games and they fucked it.

The Matrix is a lot like Star Wars in that it was low budget, so it had to be lean and inventive, but as soon as money became no object, it became a bloated mess.

I remember watching the third one and thinking it actually made the second one look better in comparison. I mean, christ, fuck zion.

I remember a friend getting me excited for Revolutions after being disappointed by Reloaded by telling me it was 'easily' the best one.

    He's still a friend. Just.

over the previous 3 evenings we have watched:

Midsommar Overly long and indulgent, think wicker man with a bit of "torture porn" which was totally gratuitous and you are about there. It wasn't terrible at least: 60%

The Girl in the spider's web on Sky it had a rating of 2/5 stars, not in my book. A totally good and serviceable while not outstanding thriller. Claire Foy as great as usual and fair play to the Oggmonster although only in it for a bit he was convincing . Not as good as the original trilogy but about the same as the James Bond one. 70%

Requiem for a dream Never seen but heard lots of people rate it very highly. I think I can see why, stand out for me was Ellen Burstyn and the score. Any film with the stunning Jennifer Connelly is a plus*
definitely enjoyed it but it is a strange one, given the director that is a given I suppose.. 80%

It's probably a bad sign for your movie when I want the machines to exterminate the last bastion of human resistance.

When the two Matrix sequels first came out, I thought the Wachowskis were going to do something quite interesting in an I Am Legend/Dune Messiah stylee by having Neo fail - that Zion must be destroyed because, as Cypher says in the first film, the simulation is much preferable to the reality, and the machines are actually the heroes, and humanity ruined the world and the machines are the better iteration of life in this context.

But no, typical Christ-like bollocks, sacrifice bleh.

Jennifer Connelly looks bonkers hot in Alita. Itís not something I would usually comment on but she kind of snaps you out of the movie when sheís on screen.

    While Iím here:

Alita: much better than I expected and I really enjoyed it. Itís a fun romp that kept me entertained throughout.

Itís pretty faithful to the books and you would have to be a real weeb to object to it.

    7/10

You've got Neo, Trinity, Niobe and Merovingian coming back. Announced so far at least.
And apparently coming out on the same day as the next John Wick - all hail Keanu Day :-)

Merovingian?! Fuck me, it's doomed already in that case.

His waffle was more irritating than the Architect ffs. That whole scene and the subsequent one where Monica Bellucci demands Neo kisses her like she's Trinity were awful.

Whoa! Whilst on the subject of Keanu, it's being heavily speculated that Bill & Ted Face the Music will go direct onto streaming services.

I love the original Matrix. One of the few films I've seen in the cinema where I walked out just speechless at how it changed the way I viewed action movies. I went the next day and saw it again. The sequels were a disappointment in hindsight, but that's been talked about to death

I'm interested in 4, but the fact that half of the cast of the new one died in the last one makes my heart sink a bit. Likely just going to be a bit stupid from the off.
They even mention in the movies that Neo was something like the 7th "one" and they'd made many worlds before. They had so many other avenues to go down without getting them back.

By dorky sci-fi standards, it's good. They explain some pretty complicated 'rules' and concepts concisely, you can always follow what's going on and they don't revert much to hyperbolic/nonsensical dramatic quotes. It's pretty tight. Plus the characters are all pretty likeable, or unlikeable where they needed to be. I was sad when Tank/Dozer got done in and was suitable pissed at Cypher. The scene where he's eating steak with the Agent is great character building.

    In Reloaded: you've got
    - Neo's biggest fan whose job is to run around Zion begging him to let him join the Nebba.
    - Endless ANGRY space politicians, including the grey haired guy who makes some bizarre analogy about how he doesn't understand how water machines work, meaning he doesn't understand Neo's powers, but he drinks water so he trusts in Neo. Some shit like that.
    - Then you've got Michael from Lost whose first line when he returns home to his wife is: "Where's my pussy at?"

    I could go on :x

The first Matrix movie was, and is, an absolute classic IMO. It landed at just the right time, with the perfect blend of interesting story, great action and spectacular effects. Still holds up today.

I remember being so hyped to watch Reloaded. Seen a few lukewarm reviews, but thought, surely it can't be that bad. I even played the "Enter the Matrix" companion game on OG Xbox before going to see it (I actually really enjoyed the game, despite it being quite janky). When I actually watched the movie though....hated it. So long winded and boring. Incredible that a film so many set piece action scenes can be so dull and so far up its own ass.

Then we have Revolutions, generally considered the worst of the 3. I actually prefer this to Reloaded. The ending is absolutely terrible and didn't make sense to me until I read Wikipedia and watched about 20 videos on YouTube explaining it. Despite this, I found the action far more enjoyable, and there seemed to be genuinely more at stake. The 2 sequels essentially feel like one movie, story wise, albeit, one incredibly long, self indulgent and nonsensical story.

I own all 3 movies on HD DVD (yep, back when that future betamax had secured exclusivity over the Matrix in HD) and it still looks spectacular when I watched it recently. The sequels don't irritate me anymore as I have no expectations, but I'd never describe them as good.

Picking up on the point at the top of this page, no way was the Matrix ever conceived as a trilogy IMO. It was absolutely a stand alone, perfectly self-contained, movie that was a huge success. Of the back of its success, suddenly sequels were required, but I don't believe that was ever the original plan. The story in the sequels always felt hastily cobbled together in my view.

Despite all of the above, can't deny that even if the reviews are dreadful, I'll be heading to the cinema to see Matrix 4 when released. I expect it to be an enjoyable enough romp at least, though definitely don't expect it to better the original.

I watched them all at the cinema last year for the 20th anniversary and, apart from the soundtrack, the original holds up incredibly well on the big screen.

The other two... not so much. From a purely technical perspective, they went balls deep on CGI just before it came good, so the shift from practical effects to CG is incredibly jarring.

But, yeah, Im all in on number 4, even if it is slightly out of morbid curiosity. I saw Jupiter Rising at the cinema which was certainly a sight to behold.

The Matrix is the only genuinely good film the Wachowski's have done.

But if you're going to have a hit, may as well have an amazing one.

Their other films have been okay at best. I'd still rather watch their films than some other directors though.

No idea what that show they did was like.

That's a bit harsh. Bound and Cloud Atlas are pretty good apparently (yet to see them myself) and they've only directed like 5 or so non-Matrix films anyway.
Sense8 - not a film, I know - is divisive but generally rated pretty highly.

Jupiter Ascending was abysmal though, one of the few films I stopped watching and intend never to go back to.

To be fair I've not seen those either, but I had forgotten they existed so I retract my earlier statement. For the time being at least.

Jupiter Ascending was not good. Not like Transformers 2 bad or anything.

Decided to just start the first film now. Just watched Trinity escape the agents and then Neo waking up in his apartment. Some hippies have knocked on his door and give him two grand for a data disc. For the money I can only assume he deals in child porn of some sort. Now he's gone raving. I can see already what Nick means about the soundtrack.
