    Highlander

The sets and scenery are great, Clancy Brown is great. I don't even mind Lambert and his magically shifting accent and bad wigs. And I almost admire Connery's refusal to try an accent at all, even when he's an immortal Egyptian named Ramirez.

All of that is fine, even great at times! But the movie just drags; you could have lopped half an hour off it and it would have been better. The love interest is annoying and doesn't do anything, the subplot with the police doesn't go anywhere, there's a bunch of pointless flashbacks, and the flashback that *is* interesting - where he saves the girl in WWII - doesn't get developed at all.

And you can see the strings holding him up at the end.

So yeah... it's patchy. Still worth a rewatch for Clancy Brown, but I don't think it's really held up overall.

    6.7/10

I tried to watch it a few months ago and was surprised how terrible it was.

Philistines. It's definitely not nostalgia that keeps me going back to it.

I've never understood why it's held in such high regard. I thought it was crap back in the day as well.

I used to like the second one better when I was a kid. I haven't watched it since I was about 12 though.

The whole film is just fun. It's preposterous nonsense and doesn't take itself remotely seriously, so it just works imo. It definitely hasn't aged well but fuck it. An 80s classic imo.

She was not his woman. She was *your* woman. And she never told you. I wonder why.

It ranks up there with Dirty Dancing and Grease as movies that are mystifyingly popular.

I dunno, the fight at MacLeod's tower when it all starts falling to pieces looks very papier mache.

All the world war 2 flashback does is set up the secretary being able to help him change identities and leave his estate to himself. What else does it need to do?

They had enough other goes at trying to make Highlander 'better' and they're all massively shitter than the first one, so it must have something. A weird, wonky just-about-holds-together fantasy that is more than the sum of its sometimes naff parts.

Whatever your current thoughts on Highlander are, can we at least agree that the reboot is probably going to be a bit shit.

Iíve never watched a Highlander film, but I do know that the second is supposed to be one of the worst films of all time.

I remember it being about the ozone layer or something. And some bad guys on hover boards.

When I was a kid I had a fever dream that I could fix the (visible) holes in the ozone layer by finding the right shaped stick to wave at it.

They also convert the mysterious immortals into just aliens. Albeit, particularly twattish aliens.

I sort of like it being a bonkers sci-fi story about magic aliens and hoverboards and medieval duelists and saving the environment. Its basically live action anime.

Could swap the hoverboards for hoverskates and just watch Jupiter Ascending.

Highlander: We don't know why we're immortal, but we've always been here.

Highlander 2: We're rebels from the plant zeist exiled to earth after failing to overthrow general ironside.

Highlander 2 Renegade Cut: We're from ancient Earth and the priests scattered us through time so the prize wouldn't be won by anyone for millenia

All the Highlanders after 2: Who knows, it's a mystery.

Some sick fucks in this thread.

I went to a Highlander screening that had a Q&A with Clancy and Christopher afterwards.

Lambert rambled in a heavy French accent so missed a lot of his answers. However his take is that it's essentially a love story... with beheadings.

It had a few diehard fans but plenty of hipsters who laughed at inappropriate times during the film. Fucking yoofs.

But if you don't like Highlander you're a poopoo head.

I agree with this, though having watched it a few months back myself it was certainly not as great as I remember. As a kid I loved the concept as well which helped, and Queen.
