A bit like Adam Wingard on Godzilla vs Kong, with those big films the directors just seem interchangeable quite frankly. You never know in this case as apparently he's gunning for a higher certificate but we'll wait and see,

I'm amazed it did well enough to warrant a sequel to be honest.

The Meg was just massively dull, and as Statham said of it "Where's all the fucking blood?"

The Meg was all about making sweet China cash.

They don't like too much gore.

    Raya and the Last Dragon

A rare miss from a Disney animated title for me. I don't know whether it hit a bit too close to home with how things have been over the last year and a half IRL, but I just found it hammered home the stupidity, selfishness and unpleasantness of people bit for way too long before it kicked in with the inevitable Disney deus ex machina.

All great to look at as usual mind you. Will definitely fill a quiet Sunday afternoon nicely.

    5/10

I didn't like it because it felt like every mediocre open world adventure game brought to film.

    In The Heights. 5/100

If I could have my 2.15 hours back, I'd rather watch Cats.

Went to the cinema tonight and watched Nobody, with Bob Odenkirk, part falling down, part John wick all with a style of tarantino flare for violence like Django.

    9/10 very fun film

Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It. Think this has to rank as the least scary horror movie in recent memory. A few atmospheric scenes and the actors turn in a decent show of it, but it all seems a bit tired now - person possessed, wants to kill people, exorcize it by shouting some Latin (although this mixes it up a bit with a sledgehammer). It honestly would have been a better film if they leaned more into the actual trial and tried something a little different than the usual haunted house nonsense. Killed a couple of hours though. 5/10

    Chronicle.

3 friends stumble across a mcguffin which leads to unexpected consequences.

Don't want to give anything away and best to go in with as little foreknowledge as possible.

Semi found-footage style movie and was a really good surprise. A short and sweet 1h 24m with no filler and crafts a decent yarn - well worth 8.25/10.

    Awake

A film in which nobody can sleep, except the audience. Utter snore-fest with one of the worst scripts in a long time.

    Monster Island

A shit film on pretty much every level and yet strangely entertaining in an awful made for Sy-Fy kind of way.

    Joker
Finally gotten around to it now it has shown up on Netflix. I found it difficult to watch at times considering how tragic of a figure he actually is (but that's the point I suppose)

    Great performance by Phoenix.
    8/10

    The Ninth Gate
I'm sure I've seen this ages ago but could barely remember any of it. It's one of the less acclaimed Polanski flicks along with, say, Frantic (which I also enjoyed incidentally)

It crosses the line into the silly realm a couple of times and not everything about it is all that well made but I though it was a good watch, warts and all.
    7/10

    The Deeper You Dig

Ultra low budget horror written, filmed, edited and scored by a husband, wife and their daughter. Not perfect by any means but bloody impressive. The cinematography is stunning, as is the use of sound with a delightfully unsettling score. It loses its way towards the denouement and it has its share of flaws, yet it is absolutely worth watching with some brilliant surreal sequences. Loved it. Almost lynchian at times. What this small team have accomplished puts most larger budget horror films to shame.

    8.5/10

    Raya and the last dragon

    Beautiful animation but very mediocre

The south East Asian setting seemed a bit vague, so wasn’t really sure where it was supposed to be set, and the constant use of modern slang didn’t really fit and was quite embarrassing. .

And for some reason, I found the American accents particularly jarring in this. I know the voice actors were Asian, which is a bit better than casting a load of white actors, like Disney was prone to doing in the 90s, but it seems a bit pointless if they all have thick American accents any way.

The dragoons were a bit weird too, sort of looked like dragons mixed with my little ponies, and the titular last dragon was a typically annoying sassy Disney side character.

The trust theme seemed a bit shoe horned in too. Why
should raya trust people who continually fuck her over?

I was really disappointed in this after Moana which is, I think, my favourite Disney movie.

    Terminator Dark Fate.

I stopped watching half way through. Apparently terminators are cold killers, who have no pity, no compassion, and absolutely will not stop until they kill you, but after that, they will feel bad about it, settle down, start a family and run a curtain business.

I switched off after the main characters drove onto a military base and openly steel a globe master and fly off in it, and the bad terminator follows them by doing the same, and then rams into them.

How did this get past the script stage?

    Jurassic Park 3

Guilty pleasure for me, and the second best Jurassic Park movie.

Fairly mindless story, but it moves along well enough, and the effects still look great for the most part, and better in many ways than the more recent movies.

The script seems a bit under-developed, like some story threads just go nowhere, and then the movie ends fairly abruptly. Lacks Geoff Goldblum, but still sollid B movie for me.
