More rubber limbed cgi, more weightless polystyrene looking sets, more very wiggy looking wigs.
One of the joys of LOTR, Fellowship in particular, is how real it made Middle Earth feel with location shooting and practical effects along with the cgi stuff. I get that The Hobbit is more of a fairytale originally but every looks fake and the soft focus bloom lighting that I guess is meant to make things feel dreamy and fantastical just highlights the fakeness even more.
This episode is also very guilty of cramming in loads of unnecessary filler and lore not included in the book.

Its not a comedy that anyone actually laughs at despite being such a good, if stalky, film.

Groundhog Day? Although RGeefe probably hates it
Welp. To each their own. Like I said before, really difficult to find a comedy that's a hit for everyone.

Can't think of too many others, though. -

Registered 10 years agoI know a few people who didn’t take to WWDITS. Not sure why. Some of them got into the series though.
But different people get tickled by different things. I remember being at a job back in the day where some co-workers were raving about Little Man. You know. With the Wayans.
Those people were wrong. Sick and wrong. -

Comedy has to be the most subjective film genre, Shirley? -

Registered 9 years agoYeah, it's not really the kind of thing you can objectively appreciate on a technical level, like, say, an action movie. If it doesn't make you laugh, then you're going to have a terrible time. I watched Master of Disguise on a plane, and it made me want to jump. -

Also, while I think WWDITTS is hilarious I also don't find it nearly as good as a lot of people seem to. -

Definitely the hardest to make for this reason. And why even the occasional "good" one is most likely overrated as everyone piles in because they jump out a bit more. See Bridesmaids. Which I didn't think was terrible but nowhere near as funny as it thought it was.

Big fan of the new Bladerunner and Arrival so thought I'd check this out. Glad I did, really enjoyed it and had me gripped throughout the 2 and a half hours runtime.

Registered 15 years agoI remember laughing at Bridesmaids, in particular the dress fitting scene. But wouldn't want to watch it again. I am not a fan of all the Apatow/Rogen/Feig/etc comedies really. Superbad being the exception.
Give me an old action comedy like 48 Hours or Midnight Run any day. -

Oddly enough I was just about to point out that the greatest comedy of all time is Airplane. I don't need to watch it, I just talk to my brother and the conversation will naturally turn to a line reading from memory.

Star Trek: The Search for Spock - 7.5/10
Not much to say about this one. It feels like a bridge between the bigger two before and after, rather than a full standalone film. It's not bad, it's not great, it's alright.
Star Trek: The Voyage Home - 9/10
Praising this one feels a little hypocritical after slamming the Kelvin movies for being so nonsensical. You can't repopulate a species with just a single pair. Parking a cloaked Klingon warship in a park in San Francisco for a full day without anyone noticing seems unlikely. As does Chekov's escape, I'll stop here because the list is endless.
But it gets away with it because it makes it clear it's supposed to be light-hearted comedy. Everyone familiar with TOS time travel episodes knows how concerned they were about changing the timeline, Voyage Home just throws everything out the window. It shamelessly breaks all rules to be just fun, just for this one film. Just roll with it and enjoy, and I'm happy to do so.
And fun it is, it has so many great moments and it genuinely made me laugh. And again it's brilliant with its characters, probably not least thanks to one of them actually directing it. Being someone who loves the TOS characters, this film warms my heart by caring so much about them.
Another stone cold Trek classic after Wrath of Khan. Must watch.

I love The voyage home even if there isn't really any trekking around the stars in it.
Now you're on to the much maligned The final frontier. I think I must be one of the few people that love it. The Uruhu dance apart it has some great Spock, Kirk and Bones moments and is really just a meditation on growing old. It feels like an extended episode.

Registered 20 years ago@Nanocrystal We have some family friends who really took Spinal Tap and Waynes World quite badly. I think, more than anything else, because it takes the piss out of their preferred musical genres.
Daft really. Whilst I think Wayne’s World has aged quite badly, Spinal Tap is still a work of genius. -

Not amazing but waaaaaaay better than I was expecting it to be. Half decent CGI, some laughs, some decent action.
Strong 6 maybe 7 when I was expecting like a 3. -
Spinal Tap is a triumph. I'm a sucker for Sabbath and Priest and all that shit, and Spinal Tap does such a great job at mocking it without devaluing it. -
The Big Lebowski
It's been a few years since I last watched, although I've found that these days I have to be in the right mood to watch it. It's still great though. Weird and wonderful characters, interesting story and dead pan humour that just works for me.
