V/H/S Quite good, more a collection of short films than a full movie. The last two stories were pretty good. 7/10 |

A documentary in which a boy boy disappears from his home town in Texas, only to be found 3 years later in a small village in Spain.
I found the story fascinating and gripping. Not saying any more in case you decide to watch it.
Holy Motors - 10/10
Holy shit! One of the most surreal, utterly compelling and bonkers films I've ever seen.
First up, it's subtitled (and French) so if that's not your bag then you probably won't enjoy this at all. It's about a day in the life of a character called Monsieur Oscar. That's all your going for the plot as I don't want to give anything away. So I'll go into some other things instead.
The central performance from Denis Lavant is an acting tour de force. Just utterly astonishing and he's in pretty much every scene of this film. Eva Mendes and Kylie Minogue show up in brief cameos and do perfectly fine.
The film is beautifully shot and the soundtrack is superb.
I'm kind of clutching at straws here as the film itself is an 'experience' and the less you know about this the better. It's kind of a fantasy film but not really.
One I'll watch again many times over the next few years. Just don't expect the film to tie up any questions you may have in a nice little bow, Hollywood style. Remarkable.
Spring Breakers - 6.5/10
I can't decide if this is a great film with hidden depth cleverly hiding under a garbage film or just a garbage film which has a few redeeming features.
The story follows four sexy college girls on their spring break journey. The US equivalent to a trip to Magaluf perhaps. Once there, things do not go to plan and go from bad to worse when they get involved with a local gangster.
This film is very much in your face right from the off. The opening 5 minutes or so play out like a loud, abrasive, crass soft-core porno. So far, so good.
It has a very distinctive visual style. All high bursts of colour, sunshine and amazing sunsets with lots of neon thrown at it. It's very good indeed.
As for the acting, well who the fuck cares? Just look at those fucking hot chicks dammit!! That's a tad unfair though. They're actually very good (mostly). There's one scene in particular where you can see them turn properly nasty. The film also does have a kind of conscience with the Selena Gomez character.
However, the main reason to see this film is for James Franco as the local gangster Alien. A bit like Gary Oldman's character is True Romance. Fascinating to watch and totally unpredictable. Barely recognisable and sleazing it up to be max. Oh yeah, and lets not forget the hot chicks.
From the BBFC website. "Contains hard drug use, strong sex, sexualised nudity, violence & language". Perfect. Except it's not. For some reason I wanted to enjoy it a lot more than I did. I can't quite put my finger on why though.
A second viewing may be in order...Yes, that may do it. -

Watched this over in Cyprus yesterday and really quite enjoyed it. A little out of the norm of what I'd usually watch but would give it a sold 70/100. -

Sinister
Original and scary horror movie. The soundtrack is excellent.
9/10*
*9/10 in horror terms, which is probably a 6/10 in real movie terms. -

Great performance by Djimon Hounsou. Leo is dependable as ever, and I didn't think his accent was that bad (someone from SA may disagree though!). Pretty good character study and it does a decent job of showing some of the horrors of the Sierra Leonean civil war and providing an insight into the conflict diamond trade. -

Registered 7 years agoSaw Spring Breakers last night and after consideration I loved it.
Left the cinema not really knowing what to think, but it's gripping and uncomfortable in some places. Franco was awesome in my opinion.
The only thing that put me off is the dialog is repeated a lot.

Really good, on the surface it seems hollow and trashy, which I guess it kind of is, but it definitely isn't stupid. Very good arty film about moral bankruptcy. -

Had this on my Sky + box though neither Mrs Evild or I could recall setting it to record - must've been a tired selection by me. Whatever, it was a fortuitous act as we both really enjoyed it.
My wife winced through the initial attack, but was fine with subsequent scenes. They were brutal, but not gratuitous in any way. Short, sharp violence.
Criticisms:
1. It was a little OTT and unsubtle about how amazing Foster's pre-attack relationship was.
2. The ending. Not sure if you can call it a sell out or not. Either way, it's not how I personally would've finished the story.
Other than those issues, it was a solid, well-acted watch for 2 hours.

An ok action film with a bit of a Hitcher vibe. I quite like the guy from Person of Interest, but he's not as good in this.

The kind of horror film that'll set you to sleep.
Kind of a Woman In Black meets Red Lights but not as good as either. Even though it was a great cast and is well acted, there are no real scares or anything even remotely creepy about it.
The plot starts off quite well as frauds and con artists are uncovered. It gets more interesting when she arrives at a boarding school which is supposedly haunted by a young boy. The plot then turns into a totally incoherent mess with an overload of extreme mumbo-jumbo. All the while delivering no scares or tension of any kind.
Avoid. -

Fun, but average martial arts action. It needed more Jean Claude in it.

Cloverfield
Utter dross, nothing enjoyable apart from a few pretty girls' faces.
Boring, full of cliches, no tension.
Was just curious about it as this is supposed to have started the whole "found footage" genre.

There's some well done films in the found footage genre so I wouldn't dismiss the style out of hand, it really depends in the subject matter and how it's used.

As for found footage, I did like Chronicle, but this was despite the shaky cam, not because of it. -
Well I actually liked Blair Witch, was genuinely scared at the end.

Nothing of the found footage genre ever since scared me. Maybe that "inside the house cameras" movie, a bit. -

A really well done Holywood movie about addiction and how it can fool and destroy people. It also comes with a bonus action scene at the start which is really quite something but this movie is a character study with some really great acting and John Goodman playing a cross between Walter and the Dude.
It's actually a 9/10 if you also think redhead Kelly Reilly is drop-dead gorgeous. -

The Impostor - 9/10
Gripping documentary, one that stays with you long after it finishes. Quite hard to believe in places!
Queen of Versailles - 8/10
Documentary about a very rich time share magnate in america, trying to build the biggest family home in the states. Financial collapse and a complete lack of taste ensue. The amount of interviews and surprisingly warm people make it pretty compelling.
Sightseers - 7/10
Odd, fun enough but I didn't find it as funny as I thought I would (the trailer made it seem more laugh out loud funny). Very brutal in places too, which actually worked well as a counterpoint to the sillyness. Lots of secondary characters in it too that make you go, "that's that guy, he was in that thing... what's his name?!"
Argo - 8/10
Solid thriller, well made and slick. I felt that knowing the end result does remove a lot of the tension, and the comedy Hollywood sequence was too far removed from the rest of the movie. Really not convinced it's best picture, it's a bit generic thriller for that. -

A powerfully disturbing, semi-character study of three lunatics (?). It's well filmed, unabashedly violent, and performed with, a lack of embarrassment or, humour (it could so easily have been a non-comical Natural Born Killers) by the three leads. It reminds me of The Last House on the Left, in it's nastiness and the genuinely interesting cinematic style.
Also, the final few minutes are some of the most glorious in recent memory. Very, very worth a watch.
