The Passenger (1975) 9.5/10 Second time I’ve sat through this. It’s just great to watch. There’s a scene towards the end that appears to have been done in a single take, that amazes me. ![]() |

Have there been any martial arts movies in recent years that compare to IP Man?
The fight scenes in that were incredible, imo. -

That's the Wong Kar-wai one, right? I imagine it will be pretty trippy and artsy, if Ashes of Time is anything to go by.
@Madder-Max
Mentioning IP Man, will you be seeing the new film about him called The Grand Master?
(not that's there's anything wrong with that!) -

I wasn't expecting much from this last night, but was pleasantly surprised. Most of the comedy comes from one-liners by Melissa McCarthy's character and you are likely to miss some jokes if you still are laughing at the last one like I was. Recommended.

I enjoyed it and the dialogue between the group was great. I just haven't really got a clue what it was about. :/ -

Doesn't really stand up that well to repeat viewings. It's overlong, it drags in a few places and the Bond girls have absolutely zero charisma and are totally forgettable. The plot has holes in it that you can drive a tube train through.
Still think Craig is an excellent Bond though, I like some of the nostalgia in there, the action scenes are pretty good and it has a decent baddie.
For me, I think it's time. Bring back the gadgets, lots of exotic locations, sexy & memorable Bond girls, move away from the Bourne style cameras and rapid cuts, give us a baddie with some kind of grand design, quirky henchmen and a great title song.
You know...make it fun! -

Yes, I kind of agree with the score but I suspect it's because there is so little classic SciFi stuff out there that even reheated stuff with Mr. Cruise will do.

Skyfall really clicked for me on the 3rd viewing. I watched it the first time in the pictures and i thought "yeahh, that was good". I seen it a second time when it came on sky movies and still kinda liked it but i watched it last week again on sky movies as nothing else was on and this time i thought it was effing brilliant. I really enjoyed it.
I really appreciated the direction this time around. That brilliant scene were Bond is tied to the chair and Javier comes down in the lift and slowly walks towards Bond while telling his rat story.
I thought it was a fantastic bit of directing. A nice long 2 minute one take shot.
Im a huge Kubrick fan and i love long one shot takes. I really despise the Michael Bay type style of directing where we have a thousand cuts in one scene and the camera is manned by what appears to be epileptic monkeys.
Anyways, i really really love Skyfall now.
I love the way they use old ideas like the cyanide pill, minature radio, the aston martin etc and somehow make them feel fresh and non-corny. I love what they done with the characters. With M and Miss Moneypenny.
I now really do appreciate the amazing work Mendes done with this film. I can see why Broccolli and co wanted him back so much. -

Arty independent Korean or Japanese film about 2 brothers separated by family breakdown. Looked really interesting on the trailer but was in fact dreadfully dull. So dull we gave up after an hour of its 2 hour+ running time.

It's Japanese and I thought it was very sweet. I thought the relationship of the brothers and what they try to do worked really well.

Erm, pretty good. It's impossible to judge properly though having read the book. Some films based on books are just like that. I had the same experience with A Single Man. Both left me, sort of, cold inside. Still, it captured the atmosphere of the book excellently although I do think it left out a couple of more interesting points. The child actors were good. At the end I kept thinking things were in my eye.

Casino Royale was a lot like Bourne with the camera work, but I don't think Skyfall was. It was much more old fashioned. Loads of really gorgeous long shots and some incredible wide shots.
It wasn't perfect, but I thought it was pretty bloody good all in all. -
All watched today starting at 7am
Predator. 8/10, starting to get a little dated but still brilliant.
Terminator salvation. 8/10, wonderful visual style with some great ideas for new trilogy. Shame they scrapped it.
Harry potter 1, 6/10 good fun and quite bizarre seeing them as kids again. Seen them all but all only once when first released.
Dark knight rises. 6/10. Very average when compared to the first two in the trilogy. Superb opening is by far the best part of the film.
Not sure which film next, maybe gladiator.
Busy day. -

Not to bad. I like Garfield's cocky and (initially) mean take on Parker. I also think it's pretty good until The Lizard shows up. They made 'im look like an oversized Bob 'oskins, init?
I've always liked the way Spier-Man uses his webbing in the fights and it's done really well here too. Some good, decent use of webbing. Although the whole climax over some device that goes "T minus 60 seconds" was just pants.
The sequel isn't really looking that great but still looking forward to seeing the first full trailer. Apparently, they're loading up with setups for the next couple of sequels after this one. Been avoiding reading about this as much as possible as there are lots of spoilers that came out of ComiCon.

Pretty derivative of many other films but I enjoyed. Kosinski has a good eye for this stuff. I hope he gets to do another Tron.
Bit long. Soundtrack was awesome. Visuals were great. -
I loved Oblivion. Sure the plot was nothing all that new, but I love a good post-apocalypse, and it was a good one. Felt a lot like a Dick novel too.
The World's End - 7/10
The weakest of the three. It had its great parts, but it was carried entirely by Nick Frost. The plot was also just fucking stupid. I don't mean silly in a fun way, I just mean nonsensical. You don't come out of SOTD or Hot Fuzz not knowing what the hell went on. Felt a lot like they tried too hard to do something the same and new at the same time, instead of going more toward either direction.
