So I'm apparently fucked again. Just been in hospital having a battery of tests as for the past couple of weeks I've been unable to exercise (heart rate rockets, get out of breath doing anything as strenuous as walking up stairs).

I just want to be healthy and get on with my training / recovery. All so fucking tedious.

That doesn't make me feel much better right now...

@askew Tested for a whole bunch of stuff, and only really have a list of things it's probably not. Most helpful comment was "we don't really know, but we're hoping it's what they would have called 'gastric flu' 100 years ago, where your body basically shuts down for a few weeks"

...cool? So what you're actually saying is we're clueless until we do the heart tests in a couple of weeks?

(I'm not even sure he was right about the gastric flu bit from ages ago as I have no symptoms matching, muppet).

Sorry chap! Hadnít read the last few posts. Not the greatest of posts to post after yours!

Someone I have cycled with had a similar thing where his heart raced and felt really fatigued after attempting to do any exercise (short of breath etc). And he like you was a training nut. Out a few times a week doing 50 miles rides and weights too. I think he was just severely run down and needed a proper rest. Possibly picked up a virus or something.

Viruses like that are pretty common. Just need to rest, take it very easy and if anything doesn't feel quite right, get back to the docs. Good luck PT.

And any kind of training will make it worse. Pushing through it isn't a great idea.

I was in the middle of a huge training block when it hit... and yes, I did indeed push through it. =/

Has anyone ever used a frame bag or handlebar bag for commuting before? I don't want to use a rucksack, but own a full suspension bike with a dropper, which limits my options for carrying stuff on my bike.

A lot of people use them for bike packing, but not sure how suitable they'd be for commuting. Obviously need to be big enough for the clothes etc., but also can't be too tightly packed so they leave everything creased. I'd need to be able to easily attach and detach it too.

I use a Carradice bag with a quick-release supporting rack that bolts onto the saddle. Have had it for years, they come in different sizes, the bigger ones can stuff enough to do a weekend tour. They're brilliant, and pretty much last for ever.

I've re-subscribed to Zwift should anybody fancy hooking for up a social ride. There was an enjoyable group ride on Friday which had 45 minutes easy, before 15 minutes balls-to-the-wall.

I believe I'm 'D Matthew' (Irish flag) should you wish to add me as a contact.

I can get a brand new one of these for £812.50: https://www.specializedconceptstore.co.uk/product/13623/2019-allez-elite/

I'm new to road bikes - does it seem like a decent deal for a first road bike?

That's pretty fantastic at that price really, certainly for 105.

Get at least two. One for wet, one for dry.

I think I paid about 800 quid 10 years ago for my Allez with only 9 speed Tiagra. Sold that for 550 a few years later

So I bought this bicycle and it's rained almost non-stop since.

I've only rode it home from the shop, which was like riding on air - it must be at least 7-8kg lighter than any other bike I've owned. It was quite scary actually.

Great stuff, road bikes are so zippy it feels like someoneís pushing you along. Hills still hurt though.

Very nice. Get some tyre levers and patches/tubes, use the bad weather to practice taking the tyre off for the inevitable flat

My frame builds have been delayed due to covid, no big deal really. one of them was for Flanders which has been cancelled/postponed anyway. Also signed up for Marmotte and Tour du Mont Blanc this summer which I suppose will both be called off. Quite a lot of cash spent on those entries

Yeah, most of my events this year will be cancelled. Knock on effect (and partly because I've been sick) is that I wont be fit enough for the important events next year... which really sucks. :(
