How many calories would you burn on a 7 mile cycle ride, over uneven ground a few medium inclines? -

Registered 15 years agoAround 370kcal. My Edge 800 usually gives around 30-35kcal/km. -
That's a cycle computer I presume? I shall get myself one, I guess most have a calorie function? I was thinking it would be a bit more than that tbh
Oh well, faster, harder and longer in the future. -

Registered 13 years agoIf you train intensely your body will be using more calories for hours after, increased muscle mass means your body will use more calories just to fuel it. Counting calories burned during a workout is one of the least useful things to consider. -

Registered 14 years agoWatched all of that "Sunday in hell" yesterday. Good stuff.
Gives a good insight into some of the tactics as well that are less obvious when you watch the TV footage/race summary.
Got a distinct sense of "wait that's not fair, the guy that won just took advantage of all the other chaps work and then snuck in to claim his victory" which incidentally is exactly what road racing is all about.
Cool.

Depends on pace but a good guide is around 40 per mile.

Not that much of a suprise. Contador will be a little fatigued from winning the vuelta and he's bound to be a little off his peak having been out for 6 months.

Registered 12 years agoYay... road cycling is fun: http://boingboing.net/2012/09/20/lunatic-suv-driver-harassing-c.html -
What a cock. That happened (not as bad as that though) the other day in the way into work. A cyclist was going the other way, and was beeped when a driver went past. -

Registered 12 years agoI've had things thrown at me twice (Aside from all the people trying to crush me on corners / open doors on me / not leave decent space when passing etc). I just don't like going on the roads at all now. -

Registered 10 years agoAs a cyclist you see the shit people get up to behind the wheel. It's frightening,
Just about to leave the house for a 4 hour drive to Northumbria, not happy with the drive, but a weekend out on the hills \0/ -

Registered 9 years agoFuck's sake: my rear axle just sheared off on a five-minute ride to the shops. It's probably not worth getting it fixed, can anyone recommend a good online store for someone on a budget?

Registered 16 years agoRear axle should be a cheap fix. Mine buckled coming out of the ramp at work. Think repairs were less than 30 quid.
Unfortunately some dozy bint decided to come between me and the hill I was about to bomb down last night, and the repair bill's currently looking at new wheel and front forks which alone are getting close to the value of the bike. Still waiting for the repair shop to get back to me with all the bad news.
On the other hand, it might mean I'm in the market for a new bike \o/ -

Registered 12 years agoOff out again tomorrow. Sadly it's one of the more boring routes but I can't spend too long out so I'm stuck being local.
Still, any day cycling is better than being sat in front of the computer. -

Registered 15 years agoI've just come back from a club ride, and for part of it I was with a former pro who rode for Peugeot in the early 1980s. He was a really nice guy, some good stories too. -

Registered 12 years agoI was dangerously overtaken by a motorist yesterday on a part of a narrow road that caused him to be centimetres away as he overtook. I took a more central position on my part of the road to put off the next car behind me trying to same thing and he still accelerated despite there still being no safe room to overtake. Shortly after this he decides to go for it and overtakes me, despite a car coming up the road the other way, almost causing a crash. Some people are so impatient, stupid and dangerous it really pisses me off.
Had some other recent aggro too, someone I overtook sped up really fast just so he could get back in front of me (even though there were red lights directly ahead). So of course, I ended up going back in front of him 5 seconds later to wait at the lights (well done, mate, I'm sure that dick-waving was worth it).
I've also had things thrown at me, been hit by a passenger of a car going past, almost hit off, cut-up extremely dangerously by cars over the years and I'm honestly a safer cyclist than most I see (I wait at 90% of red lights, I give cars room to get past when there actually is safe room to get past, I rarely cycle on the pavement, I wave cars to pull out, etc) but still get treated like shit regardless. I have no idea how I've not had a major accident yet, or been killed by these idiots, touch wood it stays that way. -

Registered 16 years agoApart from my off on Thursday night, I've had my fair share of near misses and close shaves. Never had anything thrown at me though - that's just bizarre and implies malice of forethought rather than just poor driving. -

Registered 12 years agoJust got back. Good day on the whole... not too many stops and my nephew is getting a bit fitter. Still whines like a great big whiny thing though.
Today apparently his hips were in "agony" and he couldn't push the pedals at any speed (it's really odd, he actually slows down to rest up and it genuinely looks like it's even harder for him). Still, did the usual, started well, got tired and then bitched for about a full hour before just getting on with it.
I'm hoping next time out it's just 45 mins, and that it keeps reducing. -

Registered 15 years agoSo, what's the best way to bleed hydraulic brakes? Most online guides suggest a bleed pipe attached to the bleed nipple, with a bag in the end of the pipe and then pumped through using the brake lever. LBS suggested a syringe and drawing it through though? Not that I have a suitable size bit of pipe at the mo.... -
@elstoof Yeah, it's funny but my local club (Finsbury Park CC) actually start their rides in Potters Bar, which is miles away. Also, they come across as very serious cycling business.
